Bass fishermen have less than a month before the Chamber of Commerce’s annual bass tournament. The tournament is scheduled for March 16 and 17. It was once the Record-Bee/Bruno’s bass tournament and at one time it was the largest bass tournament in Western United States with 225 teams. This year’s tournament is expected to draw approximately 100 teams. As of Thursday the number of fishmen entered in the tournament was 24 teams, Fishermen can sign up for the tournament as late as Friday March 16. Entry forms are available at the chamber office or the local tackle shops.
Clear Lake bass fishermen are having to dress warmly to fight off the cold weather. In the morning the temperatures have been dipping down to below freezing. The good news is that late afternoon the sunny weather has been pushing the temps up to over the 50 degree mark and the fish have been biting. The bass are holding out in the deeper water. Live jumbo minnows have been the top fish catcher. All the local tackle shops have the jumbo minnows.
Bass fishermen on Clear Lake are finding mixed results. Some of the fishermen report catching from 10 to even 20 fish per day and others are struggling to put a couple of bass into the boat. The good news is that several bass caught this past week topped seven pounds. The fish are schooled and if you locate a school of fish the action has been nonstop. Just about all the anglers say the trick to success to keep on the move and cover as much water as possible. A variety of methods are being used to catch fish and they range from drop-shotting a plastic worm, rigging a plastic worm on a split-shot to casting reaction lures.
