Trucks on BC highway in winter. (Tran BC) VICTORIA, B.C. – B.C. has announced the introduction of mandatory entry-level training (MELT) for new Class 1 commercial driver’s license applicants. According to a release, the program will go beyond minimum requirements set by the National Safety Code Standard for entry-level training of Class 1 drivers. MELT will become a prerequisite for Class 1 road testing beginning October 18th. The program will utilize best practices from other jurisdictions in Canada, emphasising safe driving for mountainous geography and diverse driving conditions. It will ensure commercial drivers are prepared for the roads and changing weather patterns found in the mountains. ....
stock photo FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Fort St. John and Area Better at Home weekly meals for seniors are now covered until May, thanks to Petronas. According to Laura Beamish, Program Coordinator with Better at Home, they have a partnership with Aniela’s Kitchen for meals once a week. The meals are brought to different seniors in the area on a rotation. There are 100 seniors involved with meals being given to 50 a week, meaning every two weeks, the seniors get a meal. Beamish says that Petronas approached them early in the year and were interested in paying out the program until May. She states that if they decide to continue past May, this gives them the chance to fundraise. ....

(File) VICTORIA, B.C. – The Province has announced that communities and organizations in the Northern Health region will have extra support to expand efforts in overdose response and awareness. Fort Nelson First Nation and the Society for Narcotic Opioid Wellness (SNOW) have been awarded grants in the Peace region. “People living in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities are best equipped to address the overdose crisis on the ground in their communities,” said Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “I’m grateful for the wisdom and expertise of community leaders whose innovative projects are making a difference during two public health emergencies.” ....
FORT St. JOHN, B.C – Local Tim Hortons owners are donating coffee and baked goods to frontline and essential workers in the city. On April 7th and 8th, Ron and Julia Bowie make 14 stops to thank workers in the community for their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We know that all of these groups have been instrumental in keeping our community operating and safe during these extremely difficult times,” says Julia Bowie in a release. “They continue to work hard day in and day out, and we want to provide them with an opportunity to enjoy a break with a freshly brewed cup of coffee or baked good from our Tim Hortons restaurant.” ....
