Grants aim to address overdose, connect Vancouver Islanders with live-saving supports

As B.C.’s overdose crisis rages on, Vancouver Island organizations are being given extra help to expand local overdose response and awareness efforts.
Through a provincial program, $1-million in grants is being distributed to 23 rural, remote and Indigenous communities and organizations, with five of those groups located on the island.
On the North Island, grant recipients include Port Hardy-based Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations, and Campbell River-based Kwakiutl District Health Council.
Other groups getting funding include Courtenay-based Indigenous Women’s Sharing Society, the Ts’ewulhtun Health Centre in Duncan, Ucluelet-based West Coast Community Resources, and the Dudes Club Society. ....

VICTORIA, B.C. – The Province has announced that communities and organizations in the Northern Health region will have extra support to expand efforts in overdose response and awareness.
Fort Nelson First Nation and the Society for Narcotic Opioid Wellness (SNOW) have been awarded grants in the Peace region.
“People living in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities are best equipped to address the overdose crisis on the ground in their communities,” said Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “I’m grateful for the wisdom and expertise of community leaders whose innovative projects are making a difference during two public health emergencies.” ....

New grants to help rural areas combat overdose crisis
The B.C. Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions Dec. 8 announced it is providing $1.3 million in funding to support overdose response and awareness in communities across B.C.
People in rural and remote areas face unique challenges when it comes to accessing supports and services that allow them to address the overdose crisis. Geographic remoteness may mean people need to travel longer distances to access health care and treatment, and access to Naloxone and harm-reduction services can be limited in areas with low populations, the ministry stated in a media release. ....
