Ex-Austin mayor Kirk Watson's pandemic reckoning changes priorities

Former Austin mayor and state Sen. Kirk Watson is coming home. Actually, though he had planned to, he never really left.
One academic year into his gig as the first dean of the University of Houston’s new Hobby School of Public Affairs, Watson is stepping down at the end of the month.
Laboring as I do under the odd instincts under which journalists suffer, two possibilities sprang to mind when I heard the surprising news. Scandal? Sickness?
“You OK?” I asked Watson via Twitter late Tuesday night.
Yes, he is. But some things about this past year have inspired a refocusing. They are COVID-19 and Effie and Birdie. ....

Texas bill calling for referendum on secession is dead. For now.

Oh, sure, if you go over it with a fine-tooth comb, you probably can find some wacky/dangerous things this 87th of Texas Legislatures has done or is doing. (OK, maybe the teeth don’t have to be too fine.)
But, from the Department of Small Favors, let’s offer a thankful nod today to a significant victory via something our lawmakers are not doing: They’re not giving an inch to the nutty notion of the nation of Texas, a concept advanced by a so-far fringe effort to reestablish the Lone Star State as an independent country.
The nascent but noisy Texas Nationalist Movement, dead-ended at the Capitol for now, waved the white flag, also for now. On Tuesday, it acknowledged, much to its self-righteous chagrin, that it will fail this session in its effort to put the secession question on the November ballot for a nonbinding referendum it had hoped would have been a step toward Texas independence. ....

Austin political consultant Julian Read shaped Texas, national history

My friend Julian Read, a gentleman of the old school and friend to many, called me in January. Just checking in, he said. Catching up. How were my wife and I doing?
Just fine, we said. And Read said he was just calling to tell us he loved us. And he was calling because he didn’t know if he’d ever be able to tell us that again. Sounded like he was checking in and catching up with lots of folks.
Like I said, a gentleman with many friends. And a life that included links to a varied and legendary cast of characters, including John F. Kennedy, John Connally, Elvis Presley, Darrell Royal, Siegfried and Roy, and many more. ....
