All’s the pity because Willett’s wit provided a needed respite from the all-to-often vitriol spit out on Twitter. For his efforts, the Texas House honored him as our state’s first (and still only) Twitter Laureate. Herman: House committee OKs major gambling expansion
A Texas House committee on Wednesday unanimously approved a bill to create what could be the biggest expansion of state-run gambling since then-Gov. Ann Richards bought the first Texas Lottery ticket (a loser) in May 1992 at an Oak Hill feed store.
The proposed addition (casino-like, critics say) could provide big bucks for the state via the powerful and popular combination of gambling and alcohol.
We’re talking about what Rep. Joe Moody, D-El Paso, calls “Quick Draw” lottery in his House Bill 817, which was advanced by the House Committee on Licensing and Administrative Procedures. ....

Marilyn Schwartz died in hospice care Feb. 25 in Houston. She was 89. And in her long and rewarding life we find a reminder of this frequent and happy occurrence: Interesting folks often find other interesting folks and get married.
Marilyn was married to the legendary A.R. “Babe” Schwartz, who spent 20 years representing Galveston in the Texas Senate (after four years in the Texas House) until he was ousted by Republican J.E. “Buster” Brown in 1980. What’s not to like about an election pitting a Buster against a Babe?
Babe was a progressive back when progressives were called liberals. And he was a liberal back in 1980 when the Reagan wave swept lots of folks like that out of office. ....

A Houston-area lawmaker wants to move the Capitol, which has been in town since 1888, out of Austin.
