Oh, sure, if you go over it with a fine-tooth comb, you probably can find some wacky/dangerous things this 87th of Texas Legislatures has done or is doing. (OK, maybe the teeth don’t have to be too fine.)
But, from the Department of Small Favors, let’s offer a thankful nod today to a significant victory via something our lawmakers are not doing: They’re not giving an inch to the nutty notion of the nation of Texas, a concept advanced by a so-far fringe effort to reestablish the Lone Star State as an independent country.
The nascent but noisy Texas Nationalist Movement, dead-ended at the Capitol for now, waved the white flag, also for now. On Tuesday, it acknowledged, much to its self-righteous chagrin, that it will fail this session in its effort to put the secession question on the November ballot for a nonbinding referendum it had hoped would have been a step toward Texas independence.
