meteorologist jeff. we are tracking the storm system moving off to the south right now. as you can see in the doppler radar scan, the heaviest band that hit us from about 11:00 this morning to 3:00 this afternoon has now pushed off towards the south, but we re definitely not in the clear. you can see as we put a scan on the radar we re still tracking some heavy rainfall just to the south of gilroy, gut for most of the bay area, we re just having a few showers across silicon valley, but overall that is still pretty seeing plenty of traffic heading tonight as we put on our traffic layer. what you re going to notice is a lot of red in the south bay. again, that is an indication of some of that heavier traffic that will continue to deal throughout portions of san jose. rainfall totals impressive. mount tamapais. mill valley, 1.5. even getting in on a decent amount of rainfall here in san jose with.49. here is the remarkable thing. the biggest 24-hour total of 2013 happening in

we snapped this picture of a flooded lane northbound. and the chainsaws hard at work this morning in san francisco s nob hill neighborhood. that tree came down during a storm blocking the hyde street cable car line. the weather almost toppled the power pole in lafayette. the lines came down at a construction site on second street near mount diablo boulevard at around 1:30 this afternoon. the street was closed for about 90 minutes while crews cleared the road. and a free day for students at silver creek high school in san jose. the storms sparked a transformer fire knocking out power to the school. all classes were canceled. silver creek high will re-open tomorrow. new at 5:00 the weather could be to blame for a series of underground explosions in san francisco. at least two pg&e utility vaults blew their covers on montgomery street between sacramento and clay. kpix 5 s andria borba is there with more. reporter: you can take a look behind me right now, allen, and you c

redwood city and san jose nearly a half inch of rainfall. coming up in weather, we ll talk about when the next rain chance is as this heavy rainfall ends coming up in a few minutes. by midafternoon the storm had its sights set directly on san jose. our len ramirez picks up our coverage. reporter: for families commuting southbound on oil 87 through downtown, they may not be getting home until late because traffic is at a standstill. it s been this way all afternoon ever since this very strong storm hit early this afternoon. the intense downpour seemed to catch everyone by surprise including drivers along the southbound lanes of highway 87 fire that downtown san jose. debris led to snarled traffic all afternoon after lanes were blocked. storm drains clogged with leaves were a problem for palo alto. cars splashed through the water and people in the streets had to sidestep 3 puddles stepped right through. it was deep and wet. reporter: others ran for cover not expecting
