Todays conversation and to have this chance to speak with dr. Rice. I have to start on a personal note though because we are living in such a stressful time. How are you doing . How are you holding up . Where are you right now . Well, i am in california, and i am doing just fine. Like most, quote, knowledge workers, i am able to work from home. I did hear a funny line the other day, im not sure whether im working at home or living at work. But im finding this a time when i am actually pretty productive. Im able to do almost everything remotely. Im trying to keep up my exercise routine. Im practicing the piano so i can wrestle choppin to the ground. Ive just become director of the hoover institution. But frankly the time off the road, not on airplanes, allowed me to make a smooth transition. All in all, that plus keeping in touch with friends and family by zoom or by text, its really quite okay. Its quite okay. Well, condy rice, 2020 has been and i have to say first of all, it sounds li ....
Evers and other key events in the movement. In an unprecedented threehour report, nbc news presents the American Revolution of 63. A study of the american negroes struggle for equality. Here is nbc news correspondent, frank mcghee. There comes a time, there even comes a moment in the affairs of men when they sense that their lives are being altered forever. That an old order is dying and a new one is being born. That moment comes sooner for some and for others, it comes later. For some, the moment arrives when a deed of new dimension sets the hour apart. For others, when familiar words are spoken. Later, but still suddenly it seems, men are saying things and doing things theyve never said or done before. Then we know we are experiencing a revolution, but we cannot say, though historians will try, when it began. We know that autumn does not begin with the turning of the leaves, but earlier, on some forgotten afternoon when a s ....

The fact that we are facing so many at one time is both overwhelming and clarifying. I spoke sunday afternoon at a rally for justice at kelly ingram park in birmingham where 57 years ago, in the shadow of the 16th Street Baptist Church, the Birmingham Police turned fire hoses and vicious dogs on peaceful demonstrators many of them schoolchildren who were making a stand for equal rights and importantly a stand for dignity. The scenes from birmingham at that time and around the world made it clear that the inequity in our society could no longer be ignored. Sadly, the legislative chang ....
Of the 1963 childrens crusade. We do so tonight with an authors talk featuring paul kicks. Paul is the author of you have to be prepared to before you can begin ten weeks in birmingham. That america, while reflecting on a photo of Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin suffocating, george floyd, paul is shocked by its parallels to the iconic may 1963 photo of a black teenager in birmingham, alabama, being attacked by a white officer and an aggressive shepherd. These similarities motivated to uncover the legacy and full history behind the historic civil rights photograph. Pauls book light on the strategy of the 1963 ten week southern christian Leadership Conference campaign end segregation led by dr. Martin luther jr. King, along with white walker, Fred S ....
Im a scholar here at the American Enterprise institute, and it is my great honor and pleasure to welcome all of you to aei for this special forum to mark the 60th anniversary of the march on washington. The march took place on august 28th of 1963, so were a little early marking the anniversary and we decide it to be a little early so that we could bring together people who will otherwise be scattered across a variety of events and celebrations this month. And as a result, we really do have an extraordinary lineup of sessions today looking at the march and its legacy and the broader Civil Rights Movement from a variety of angles, thinking about what it has to say to us now in ways that are both timeless and timely. Were going to hear from scholars, from journalists, from policy thinkers, from religious leaders. Some of them are colleagues here at aei, including our ....
