Decision on marijuana: Board votes to opt out: Shoreline access recommendations adopted

In a former post, it was stated the Town Board at its May 7 meeting voted to opt out of permitting retail sales of marijuana. That was incorrect. The Board voted to hold a public hearing on the issue on May 28.
If the Town ops out, it could be reversed either by a Town Board vote or as a result of a referendum if enough residents petition for a public vote. A petition could put the issue to a vote in November.
The town is also holding a public hearing on banning smoking of cigarettes, marijuana or any other substance at either Crescent or Wades beaches. That concern came from members and Police Chief Jim Read, fearing complaints from families with young children if smokers on the beach were in their vicinity. To ban marijuana, they had to ban all substances that might be smoked. ....

Town chooses to opt out on marijuana law

The Town Board wants to opt out of that part of the new state law that would allow marijuana dispensaries or cafes where it could be purchased and/or used. But it still must allow marijuana to be smoked. However, it can ban smoking any substance in certain places. As of Tuesday’s Town Board work session, the plan called for banning smoking at either of the town beaches Crescent or Wades.
Before it can act, a public hearing must be held and is scheduled for the regular meeting on Friday, May 7. ....

Pop-up businesses seek town approval: Town Board to continue discussions next week

Several businesses are looking to the Town Board for a go-ahead to operate on town-owned sites this summer.
With Sunset Beach closed last summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Islander had a food truck at Crescent Beach. If the state continues its reopening policies as COVID numbers drop, Islander owner Ashley Knight would like to return to the same site this summer.
She made the request a few weeks ago and was encouraged to consider Wades Beach or another part of Crescent Beach away from Sunset Beach for her food truck. ....
