Town chooses to opt out on marijuana law (Credit: Courtesy photo) The Town Board wants to opt out of that part of the new state law that would allow marijuana dispensaries or cafes where it could be purchased and/or used. But it still must allow marijuana to be smoked. However, it can ban smoking any substance in certain places. As of Tuesday’s Town Board work session, the plan called for banning smoking at either of the town beaches Crescent or Wades. Before it can act, a public hearing must be held and is scheduled for the regular meeting on Friday, May 7. ....

But at a series of public hearings before the Suffolk County Legislature this winter, yacht clubs, boaters and owners of waterfront property did just that. On March 2, the Suffolk County Legislature approved the continuation of the county’s 10-year-old aquaculture lease program (known as SCALP) with a boatload of amendments, including a 43% reduction in the underwater acreage that can be leased and new fees for growers. Legislator Bridget Fleming (D-Southampton) called it a good compromise that both sides were unhappy. ....
