May 8, 2021 A paddleboarder who was pronounced dead after he was found in the ocean off Kihei on Thursday was identified by police as Chima Edwin Njaka, 57, of San Jose, Calif. He was found floating facedown about 100 yards offshore from Kauhale Makai after fire crews responded to a 1:05 p.m. call reporting a missing paddleboarder and unattended paddleboard near Kalepolepo Park, according to the Maui Fire Department. May 7, 2021 A 56-year-old California man was pronounced dead Thursday after he was found in the ocean off Kihei, the Maui Fire Department reported. A fire rescue crew aboard the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter spotted the man floating facedown about 100 yards offshore from Kauhale Makai after responding to the 1:05 p.m. call reporting a missing paddleboarder and unattended paddleboard near Kalepolepo Park, the Fire Department said. An ocean safety officer aboard a rescue watercraft brought the victim to shore, where medics pronounced him dead, according to the Fire Department. The ocean was reported to be calm.
