May 7, 2021 A 56-year-old California man was pronounced dead Thursday after he was found in the ocean off Kihei, the Maui Fire Department reported. A fire rescue crew aboard the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter spotted the man floating facedown about 100 yards offshore from Kauhale Makai after responding to the 1:05 p.m. call reporting a missing paddleboarder and unattended paddleboard near Kalepolepo Park, the Fire Department said. An ocean safety officer aboard a rescue watercraft brought the victim to shore, where medics pronounced him dead, according to the Fire Department. The ocean was reported to be calm. Kihei firefighters and the Coast Guard also responded to search. ....
Apr 9, 2021 An injured swimmer was airlifted to medics after he suffered a possible back injury after reportedly jumping off a 40-foot waterfall into a pond Wednesday at Twin Falls in Haiku, the Maui Fire Department reported. Paia firefighters and Kahului rescue firefighters aboard the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter responded to the call at 1:16 p.m. Paia firefighters hiked to the swimmer’s location and packaged the patient before the helicopter arrived to airlift the patient to waiting medics. The 40-year-old Oakland, Calif., resident was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition with back pain, the Fire Department reported. ....

The fire was reported at 3 p.m. along Kahekili Highway between Waiehu Beach Road and Makaala Drive, according to the Maui Fire Department. Crews were working to contain the fire in heavy brush on the mauka side of the highway, using dozers to cut a break around the perimeter. It was 50 percent contained as of 7:45 p.m. Second photo: Smoke rises from a brush fire burning in the Waiehu area. The Fire Department said conditions were gusty, with winds of about 20 mph. No structures were threatened. The cause was unknown.
