It is a sad but true statement that shootings have become so commonplace in American society that we tend to think of gun violence in terms of numbers, not stories. When we do tell the story of gun violence in the United States, the story we tell can look and sound very different depending on what community experienced the shooting. In urban communities of color, the narrative of gun violence does not always tell the stories of the lives lost or forever changed. What we do hear too often places the blame ....

This Black History Month, I attended a Feb. 7 Massachusetts-wide virtual event marking National Gun Violence Survivors Week. This event was produced by the Massachusetts chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
A year ago, the Western Massachusetts group of Moms Demand met Juanita Batchelor at a peace march in Springfield. Juanita’s son Darrell Jenkins was killed by a gun wielding shooter on June 4, 2014. The homicide remains unsolved.
Juanita has founded MORE (Mothers Overlooking, Reaching Out, Empowerment) an organization seeking justice for the numerous unsolved homicides in Springfield and providing services to survivor families. All these families are African American. ....
