Town councilors dig into budgets, weigh added funds for HHS

Funding for community health and human services organizations was the name of the game Monday as the Jackson Town Council again pored over the town’s various budgets at a special afternoon meeting.
“If there’s no other message that we send to our community — it’s something that’s very important right now — this needs to be the year of health and human Services,” Councilor Jim Rooks said as councilors wrapped up a lengthy discussion about how they would like to see such organizations funded.
The council heard from Town Manager Larry Pardee and Finance Director Kelly Thompson about the town’s other budgets — including public safety, public works, information technology, planning and community development, among several others — but it was health and human services funding that was discussed at greatest length Monday. ....

Housing director wants to spend $13 million on housing 'crisis'

April Norton, director of the Jackson/Teton County Housing Department, wants to spend $13 million to build homes and expand housing programs in the upcoming fiscal year.
“It’s crisis level,” Norton told the Jackson Hole Daily, referring to the state of Teton County’s affordable housing. “There are houses that used to be rented for $2,500 a month that are now being rented for $10,000 a month. It’s really hard to wrap your head around.”
Norton spoke with the Daily after a week of budget hearings in which government and nonprofit officials repeatedly said the housing pinch is making staffing difficult. ....

Town ready to take liquor license applications in June after temporary pause

The Jackson Town Council approved Monday the application process for retail and “bar and grill” liquor licenses. The decision sets opening and deadline dates for applications for the coveted licenses.
Before Monday’s vote, the applications had been temporarily suspended while staff updated the application packets and procedures.
Councilors instructed Town Clerk Sandy Birdyshaw and her staff to make the updated application packets available for the two types of licenses on May 3, with applications then being accepted from June 1 through June 15. Staff was directed not to accept any such applications after June 15 until further notice.
The town currently holds two retail liquor licenses — with a third pending appeal by Tastebuds LLC before the Wyoming Supreme Court — and one bar and grill license, according to Birdyshaw. ....
