Town and county elected and appointed officials are ready to discuss whether thereâs a better location for the fairgrounds, whether the space could be better used for housing, and how to preserve Jackson Holeâs âWestern heritage.â But with the conversation coming on the heels of planning for northern South Park, at least one official is worried that people wonât be ready for another major undertaking. Jackson town councilors agreed Monday to include projected revenue from a half mill of property tax â a tax the town hasnât levied in about 40 years â in the next budget, though a final decision on whether to actually approve the property tax wonât come until later. Though the council will vote to approve the final version of the Fiscal Year 2022 budget on June 21, state law gives councilors until July 31 to decide whether to approve a property tax and at what rate. Town Manager Larry Pardee, at the behest of the council, presented the various effects of a property tax on town property owners, looking both at varying property valuations and what it would cost those property owners at different levels of property taxes. A graph Pardee showed at the meeting looked at how much a property tax would cost a homeowner whose property was valued at $350,000 and increasing incrementally up to a $1 million valuation. The decision came following public comment from several neighboring business owners, and internal debate among the council. Some of the public commenters expressed serious concern about the disruption they see the summer construction causing them, while others voiced support for getting the project underway quickly so it will be completed sooner. Likewise, councilors weighed the costs and benefits of approving the plan as-is and allowing the construction to begin during the summer, as opposed to forcing the Darwiche family, who own Hotel Jackson, to wait until the fall months â after peak tourism season â to begin the project. Phase 2 of the hotelâs expansion includes additional hotel rooms, a spa, and a high-end restaurant, which the staff report notes âwill help add visitors and new residents within easy walking distance to downtown Jackson shops, amenities, and transportation options.â The project will extend the hotel from its current entrance ....
