East vs. West? ‘Regional equity’ emerges as flashpoint in debate over funding for Holyoke Soldiers’ Home

Local lawmakers and veterans advocates are smarting over concerns their counterparts in Eastern Massachusetts are raising over regional equity amid a debate over a new, $400 million Holyoke Soldiers’ Home.
During a lengthy hearing Tuesday before the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Administration and Regulatory Oversight, some argued the price tag was too high to spend on one project in Western Massachusetts while more veterans live in other parts of the state namely Bristol, Plymouth and Barnstable counties.
Detractors cited previous academic studies tracking declining numbers of veterans, and recommendations to move away from institutional care that were never acted upon. Holyoke Soldiers’ Home advocates urge state lawmakers to move swiftly or lose fed momentum

The Joint Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight on Tuesday is hosting its first virtual meeting to debate a $400 million bond bill to finance a “reimagined” Holyoke Soldiers’ Home, as the Baker administration races against a tight deadline to secure critical federal funding.
National Guard Major Gen. Gary Keefe, also the chairman of the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home Board of Trustees, led the debate by urging committee members not to miss the opportunity despite skepticism over the accelerated timeline.
The bond bill, H.64, was sponsored by Gov. Charlie Baker and presented in February to capture a 65 % contribution from the federal government by April 1. ....

WORTHINGTON Picking up where it left off following a pair of meetings last month, the Worthington Planning Commission on Tuesday night approved a preliminary plat for the city’s planned Cecilee Addition.
During a Jan. 5 Planning Commission meeting, members discussed the preliminary plat and ultimately opted to table recommending its approval until having a joint session with the city council. Council members, in a joint discussion with commission members during a Jan. 20 council meeting, indicated their preference for a new park the reason for the commission’s delay earlier in the month as part of the project. ....

WORTHINGTON The Worthington City Council on Monday night conducted its annual meeting Monday night, choosing its mayor pro tem for 2021 and approving annual appointments.
During a meeting of just about five minutes in duration, city council Mike Harmon was elected as mayor pro tem for the next 12 months. Harmon, who also served in the post during 2020, will act in the event of Mayor Mike Kuhle’s absence throughout the current year.
Committee and subcommittee assignments for the five Worthington City Council members and Kuhle were also approved Monday. Those assignments are as follows: ....
