another witness announced for tomorrow s primetime hearing. and new reporting on how donald trump had the secret service scrambling on the day of the attack. plus, we ve got the top headlines from last night s midterm election primaries that may serve as a warning to democrats. good morning and welcome to way too early on this wednesday, june 8th. i m jonathan lemire. thanks for being with us. senators had hoped to reach a bipartisan deal on gun safety by the end of this week, but nbc news has learned that that timetable may slip. perhaps into next week. senators have hit a snag on how to expand background checks. two people close to the talks tell nbc news at issue is whether to add waiting periods for 18 to 21-year-olds and to enable the fbi to conduct background checks on their juvenile records. a spokesman for republican senator john cornyn of texas said he is not considering waiting periods but does support the provision on the juvenile records. democrats, ....
good morning to our viewers here in the united states and all around the world. it is tuesday, june 7th. we have important new reporting this morning on the status of the gun safety talks in washington. negotiators met late into the night, and it seems there are areas of possible agreement. narrow agreement, but agreement. word of a measure that might change how people younger than 21 buy semiautomatic weapons. both the killers in buffalo and uvalde were 18, they used semiautomatic ar-15-style weapons. this would not be a ban on sales to those under 21, which the president and others have called for, but something of an adjustment and we will have details on that in just a moment. since friday, gun violence has killed more than a dozen people and injured dozens more in 13 mass shootings in the united states. awful scenes at graduation pop particulars, night club, tainment district and strip mall. let s go to lauren fox on capitol hill to get the latest on what is bein ....
Joining us now with a look at axios a.m., congressional reporter for axios alayna treene. what is the one big thing for this morning? good morning, jonathan. great to be here with you. and our one big thing is taking a look at really a preview of the first of several meticulously crafted hearings by the january 6th committee, which start tomorrow night in primetime. and i m told these watergate-style hearings produced by james goldstin, the former president of abc, they have a star documentaryand producer behind the scenes working this, but it s going to be a mix and a blend really of elements from the first two trump impeachment hearings a couple years ago. we ll see haunting video footage from some of the witnesses tomorrow that will be from nick quest who embedded with the proud boys on the day of the ....
Night because we were talking about the proud boys, this person who did a documentary on the proud boys will be a witness thursday night, we re told, as will a capitol police officer. james goldstin, who i worked for when he was ep of gma and night line, has been brought in to help produce these hearings. what does that tell you? it shows you they want to make this compelling. they know that a certain segment of the american public has a tin ear to this, sadly, and shouldn t, but has seen that video of them storming the capitol so many times now it may not have the same impact, so i think that they brought in essentially an expert, a show runner, to try to package it in a way that breaks through. it is worth remembering that most congressional hearings are absolutely awful to watch on television. they are, you know, when they give each member of congress five minutes to ask questions when they blow veeate for five minutes and don t ask questions ....
