learned a few minutes ago that highway 84 in livermore will be closed until 7:00 p.m. this is a major artery of the tri valley and it s already been closed for more than 12 hours. you see our nbc chopper overhead. it closed this morning after this deadly crash involving three separate cars and a big rig. that big rig actually ended up on its side on an embankment. this happened at 4:45 this morning between vineyard avenue and value seat owes road. they cannot get the road open because they don t have enough workers to clear the debris. there s no word yet on what caused this crash, but one man driving one of the cars was killed. three other drivers were hospitalized. a new glimpse into the life of the harvard educated lawyer accused of the bizarre kidnapping in vallejo. these are pictures of matthew muller, law school grad and marine. tonight he remains in jail. one of his former classmates is surprised to hear this turn of events. nbc bay area s mark matthews joins us from
live at the bridge with more on the cause. reporter: that s right, janelle. caltrans now believes they know what started those two back-to-back fires on the bridge. they say the fires were likely a report result of flares left behind by caltrans maintenance workers. now, caltrans engineers spent the day investigating those mysterious fires after a blaze broke out this afternoon. that fire occurred on the very same spot on the bridge where flames erupt edmond night. a driver captured that fire and posted a photo on twitter. after reviewing bridge surveillance video today and finding flare remnants at the fire scene, caltrans now feels pretty confident they know the cause. flares were left near the eastbound number one lane and it is thought at this point in time that they are the likely cause of the fire on monday night and today. reporter: now, caltrans believes that wind may have blown those flares into the graded joint where they eventually ignited and caught fire. no
