Smokers and those with disabilities also are included in this group. • Essential workers first responders; educators including school staff, day care workers, Head Start workers and preschool staff; food and agriculture workers in processing plants, veterinary health care, livestock services and animal care; manufacturing; corrections workers and incarcerated people; U.S. Postal Service workers; public transit workers including flight crew members, bus drivers and train conductors; in-person support personnel; grocery store workers; and shelter and adult day care staff.

That’s the conclusion of a study from researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, published in a special issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study was based on a search of nearly 25 million news items from six prominent U.S. and global news sources, among them The New York Times, the Washington Post and The Associated Press.
