The Indian government has extended its restriction on export of raw sugar, white sugar, refined sugar and organic sugar under some codes beyond October, according to an order dated Wednesday.
India is expected to ban mills from exporting sugar in the next season beginning October, halting shipments for the first time in seven years, as a lack of rain has cut cane yields, three government sources said.
The Centre is planning to ban the exports of sugar amid a fall in production, as per a media report. The output, which was hit by unseasonal rainfall, is expected to touch 32.8 million tonnes in the 2022-2023 marketing year, 3.5 per cent lower than the earlier forecast
Indian’s sugar production in the current 2022-23 season (October-September) is projected at about 327 lakh tonnes (lt), down from the previous year’s 359 lt.
