Has said he has a meeting on gun control scheduled. are you aware of that meeting? are you or any republican colleagues of yours heard from the president of the white house on that? i have not. i have requested a meeting with the president on background checks right about the first of the year. we ve not heard back from him. my office has circled back with his staff. we ve not heard back. i was in the meeting you alluded to earlier about gun violence prevention some time back. he made some strong statements there. as you know, he backtracked as soon as he had a conversation with the nra. i m hopeful we don t see a repeat of that. we have a bill in the senate passed by a bipartisan majority of the house that will save lives, that is the most important gun violence prevention bill in play. all we have to do is pass this and lives will be saved. ....
Legislation immediately. what drove you to write this letter? do you think anything is going to come of it? well, specifically, we really want the senate to come back and consider hr-8 and hr-1112 really focused on background checks and giving law enforcement the ability to track guns that have been involved in crimes. we think as mayors certainly the united states congress of mayors and mayors in general have been leaders in this space for a long time. these are really common sense solutions. we know in this topic there are folks on either end of the spectrum that aren t going to be happy about anything. doing nothing or doing too much. but we think as mayors, and i know mayor whaley, i was in dayton a few days ago with her. i know mayor margo personally. i think mayors are tired of seeing these things happen in their cities. this was a terrible weekend for america s cities. and, you know, i think the understanding and hopefully the ....

mitch mcconnell seems very unlikely at this point to put that bill on the floor. i m wondering why you think that is, first of all. second of all, do you think the politics on this are changing in a way that is outstripping what has been the conventional political thinking that has led to this gridlock on this issue. well, it s changing with the people that matter, that s the voters and the people of the united states of america. well over 90% of americans believe we should expand background checks. they know it saves lives. they support it. why the republicans in the senate and many in the house and the president are so slow on the uptake is beyond me. background checks work. they save lives. the american people know it. their political leaders need to catch up. congressman, you are a gun owner yourself, also a democrat. ....
