The 100-year-old Howson Dam in Wingham could be nearing its end.
North Huron Council have instructed staff to come up with how much it will cost to take down the dam.
Reeve Bernie Bailey says the dam was built in 1921 and holds so much history.
But he say its starting to deteriorate and is becoming a safety issue.
 
 
Bailey says the Township’s Dam and Pond Committee, which had originally called for the dam to be saved, are considering whether to install a weir dam in its place once the structure is taken down.

Howson Dam in Wingham, Ont. to be demolished


WINGHAM, ONT.
A piece of Wingham’s history will soon be a pile of rubble.
North Huron council voted to demolish the 100-year-old Howson Dam at Monday night’s council meeting.
A recent engineer’s report found that without millions of dollars in repairs, the dam would be too unsafe to remain.
“It’s just dilapidated to the point where we have to take care of it before someone gets hurt on it, or near it,” says North Huron Reeve Bernie Bailey.
Repairing, rebuilding or demolishing the century-old dam, which once helped provide Wingham’s electricity, divided the Huron county community. ....
