Female, armed with a handgun, and they stopped a male driver and forced him out of his vehicle. Police pursuit happened. Here today who knew him and worked with him closely had towering praise for him, said he was a compassionate friend, fabulous at what he did and a mentor to all. The firefighters gathered to grieve the loss of lieutenant kevin mcrea. A guy that cared about his community, a guy that treated everybody with the jut most respect and brought you together in the firehouse. Lindsay the 24 leon the 24year veteran was one of the first on the scene at this highize on seventh street northwest. Mcrea collapsed soon after making it outside. Coworkers trited but con save his life. He died later at the hospital. Later in the day, scores of firefighters lined up and saluted as mcreas body was taken away. These people say after rushing out of the burning building they ran into mcrea. He and his sister were having trouble breathing and mcrea insisted they go to the hospital. Dispatch crews, other crew members came down, stripped down a fire truck and hung black tarps to prepare for a funeral. Lieutenant kevin mccray worked with fire engine 6 for roughly six years. Hed been with the d. C. Fire department over two decades. Deputy chief John Donnelly worked with mccray in the rescue squad. It was challenging work, but donnelly said mccray did more than succeed. Whether its going over the side of a building on a rope or how to search in a burning building to find a victim, kevin had done all of those thing at an extremely high level and he taught other people to do them. Reporter he worked hard with a smile. It could get pretty ugly in 20 hours into your shift when youre busy and he was there doing it just the same as when he came in the door in the morning.
