Tussock Fire near Crown King burns 5,500 acres; containment at 15%

The Tussock Fire burning near Crown King burned an additional 1,000 acres since Tuesday for a total of more than 5,500 acres as of Wednesday morning, fire officials announced.
Firefighters started to get a handle on the human-caused blaze with at least 15 percent containment as of Wednesday, according to Inciweb, a national wildfire tracking website.   
Nearly 200 extra firefighters and heavy equipment operators arrived Tuesday at the Tussock Fire, bolstering crews at the site, fire officials said in an update Wednesday morning on Inciweb.
Heavy equipment was deployed to clear thick brush and improve access for crews working on the fire’s western perimeter, according to the update. ....

Evacuations ordered as Tussock Fire burns over 4,100 acres, moves toward Crown King

After burning 4,171, the Tussock Fire remained 0% contained and pushed toward Crown King as of Monday morning, according to the Bureau of Land Management.
Evacuation orders for Minnehaha, Fort Misery, and Horsethief Basin remained in effect as well as road closures for Senator Highway (FS Road 52) between Hooper Saddle (FS Road 362) and Crown King (FS Road 259), while Crown King itself remained closed to non-residents, according to Deputy Scott Reed of the Yavapai County Sheriff s Office.

CROWN KING, Ariz. Rebecca Thomas and her family couldn t wait to take their Can-am Maverick off-roading. They moved to the Valley from Utah last year and have been eyeing the paths near Crown King. Finally, with her daughter in town for Mother s Day weekend, they did it Saturday.
