Tussock Fire near Crown King burns 5,500 acres; containment at 15%

The Tussock Fire burning near Crown King burned an additional 1,000 acres since Tuesday for a total of more than 5,500 acres as of Wednesday morning, fire officials announced.
Firefighters started to get a handle on the human-caused blaze with at least 15 percent containment as of Wednesday, according to Inciweb, a national wildfire tracking website.
Nearly 200 extra firefighters and heavy equipment operators arrived Tuesday at the Tussock Fire, bolstering crews at the site, fire officials said in an update Wednesday morning on Inciweb.
Heavy equipment was deployed to clear thick brush and improve access for crews working on the fire’s western perimeter, according to the update.
Phoenix District helps to translocate owls displaced by development

Through a partnership with the non-profit organization Wild at Heart and the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the BLM s Phoenix District Office has been working on a burrowing owl augmentation project to translocate owls displaced by development throughout the greater Phoenix area to BLM lands.
Burrowing owls across their range have been in decline in recent years. The owls are a BLM sensitive species which means that actions are needed to alleviate any threats to future declines, including relocation and repatriation projects such as this one.
Most of the owls being displaced are coming from land adjacent to agricultural land, so it s important that the relocation sites are also adjacent to agricultural lands.
