Hardy, historic and haunted: Hooker Hut comes home

The hut was officially reopened on Thursday, its restoration delayed by Covid-19 and weather.
Department of Conservation senior ranger in charge of search and rescue and recreation at Aoraki Mt Cook David Dittmer said the managers at the time knew if they had left the hut in the park, ‘’it would go over the side and would be completely wrecked”. ....

The death of an Australian police officer caught in a deadly South Island avalanche has resulted in a raft of safety recommendations for other New Zealand mountaineers.
Nathan Deutschbein, a New South Wales police officer and father of two girls, died on November 29, 2018, when he was caught in an avalanche and became buried while descending the Eugenie Glacier in the Aoraki – Mt Cook National Park with a climbing companion.

Avalanche Advisory warns of rockfall dangers on Aoraki/Mt Cook


Mountain Safety Council chief executive Mike Daisley said a moderate risk is still pretty high for this time of the year.
There s great weather at Aoraki Mount Cook National Park at the moment, but just because it s nice and sunny doesn t mean the risk isn t there.
Mt Cook always has an avalanche risk higher up on the mountain where the experienced climbers go but this warning is also lower down the mountain as well.
Daisley said there is little to no risk for day walkers in the valley below walking on the Hooker Valley Track.
The Department of Conservation do a great job of mitigating the risk for those on the track. ....
