Climbers did not recognise avalanche risk in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park - coroner


The other two continued, reaching the saddle at the top of Eugenie Glacier on the Main Divide around midday when the area was fully exposed to the sun.
Seeing snow sliding down the mountain a couple of hundred metres away, the pair decided to head back down to Sefton Bivvy, the coroner s report said.
At around 1pm, halfway down Eugenie Glacier, the two men were struck by an avalanche and carried 250 metres.
Mihaila was not buried. Deutschbein’s legs were exposed, but his upper body was buried.
Mihaila said he used gloves and a shovel to dig Deutschbein out but found, after uncovering his face, he was deceased. ....

The death of an Australian police officer caught in a deadly South Island avalanche has resulted in a raft of safety recommendations for other New Zealand mountaineers.
Nathan Deutschbein, a New South Wales police officer and father of two girls, died on November 29, 2018, when he was caught in an avalanche and became buried while descending the Eugenie Glacier in the Aoraki – Mt Cook National Park with a climbing companion.
