Search And Rescue Teams Receive National Award For Perilous High-altitude Rescue


(Tuesday, May 18).
Maritime NZ’s
Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ), the Department of
Conservation Aoraki Mount Cook Alpine Rescue Team and
Incident Management Team, and the Otago Rescue Helicopter
were jointly recognised for their efforts in rescuing two
climbers trapped near Copland Pass on 10 January
2020.
When the two climbers, who were stuck on a small
ledge and unprepared for a night in the open, activated
their distress beacon at 11pm, RCCNZ tasked the Aoraki Mount
Cook Alpine Rescue Team and the Otago Rescue Helicopter to
respond.
A significant weather front was imminent with
gale force winds, and rain and snow expected at high ....

The team responsible for a night-time high-altitude rescue of two trapped climbers in the Southern Alps has been recognised for their efforts.
The Otago Rescue Helicopter, Maritime NZ s Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ), the Department of Conservation Aoraki Mount Cook Alpine Rescue Team (AMCART) and Incident Management Team were awarded a Certificate of Achievement at the New Zealand Search and Rescue (NZSAR) Awards on Tuesday. ....

Historic Hooker Hut reopens

Historic Hooker Hut reopens
The hut, which first opened in 1910 and is the oldest in the National Park, was removed from its previous site above the crumbling moraine wall of the receding Tasman Glacier by helicopter in 2015.
It was stored in Twizel until its restoration by contractor Recreation Construction and flown back into a much more accessible location about two hours walk into the Hooker Valley.
DOC Aoraki Operations Manager Sally Jones says it’s fantastic to have the hut back in the national park where it can be well-used by visitors.
“The refurbished hut will open up the opportunity for a wide range of people to experience a night in the pristine alpine environment of Aoraki.” ....

The hut was officially reopened on Thursday, its restoration delayed by Covid-19 and weather.
Department of Conservation senior ranger in charge of search and rescue and recreation at Aoraki Mt Cook David Dittmer said the managers at the time knew if they had left the hut in the park, ‘’it would go over the side and would be completely wrecked”. ....
