Veteran of the Week - Jim Lowe Lew McCreary Another Veteran I met at the Honor Café event was Captain Jim Lowe. He was born January 7, 1942 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve program in Milwaukee as a Seaman Recruit in 1961 and attained the rate of QM-3 (SS) and qualified in submarines while assigned to SUBDIV 9-227 as a student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Upon graduation in 1964, he entered OCS at Newport, Rhode Island and was commissioned as an Ensign, USNR on December, 1964. Captain Lowe’s first duty assignment was to the Naval Weapons Laboratory, Dahlgren, Virginia. He qualified as a Weapons Test and Evaluations Officer. In June, 1968, he was assigned to the USS Providence (CLG-6), Seventh Fleet Flagship, as a First Lieutenant and participated in WestPac/Vietnam operations as well as First Fleet Flagship operations.
