Today is november 11th, 2019, which marks the 100th anniversary of veterans day in america. Originally known as armsist day, this is a day when we recognize the service of all u. S. Military veterans. Were delighted to mark this important day with a special event designed to salute americas veterans. Im especially pleased that our guest this evening include a fellow north carolinian who is the nations secretary of veteran affairs, the honorable robert wilky. The society of the cincinnati was our countrys first veterans group. Its particularly fitting that the secretary will be providing remarks. Youll hear a little more about that in just a moment. Were gathered here tonight to listen to a distinguished panel of noted historians who will be discussing the experience of American Veterans since the revolutionary generation more than 240 years ago. Specifically the John J Pershing centennial lecture series. Currently serves as the chair of military history at the United States army command and general Staff College. He has notably published the school of hard knocks combat leadership in the American Expeditionary forces, which was the recipient of a society for military histories 2013 distinguished book award. He has also recently published pershings crusaders, both of which you can pickup in our museum store. Been doing ongoing researching, contextualizing both 1917 and our world today, providing a critical lens on the United States and its relationship to war. My great friend and polish brother chris kowlikowski is the director of the macarthur memorial which is a fantastic resource and a mustsee place to visit. But once upon a time he was a civil war guy before he found himself embroiled in world war ii. He started as an internal at Fredericksburg Spotsylvania National Military park, from there hes gone to perriville where he was the site manager, hes done work with the civil war trust, he went to the George Patton museum which is what first got him involved with world war ii and while hes busy doing that hes written a couple fan ....
