But for other officers of the government, including the Vice President , the constitution offers no instruction whatsoever about the oath required. Well, the First Congress stated that only senators could administer the oath to the Vice President. A few months later, they change their mind giving judges that ability. The oath itself has changed many times over the years. The oath in use today for the Vice President has been around since 1884. You will be interested to know that our guest tonight took the oath as Vice President , with his left hand resting on none other than president reagans own bible. To introduce our panel and i to introducea our panel i wil now turn over to a former presenter at the festival, the author of americas great storm leading to hurricane katrina, and the 63rdat governor of the state of mississippi, the honorable haley barbour. You know, ive never held but one elective Public Office in my career, and it was governor. And i look back today and i see legislators who i worked with and people on the staff, democrats, republicans, just so many fond memories. And one memory im glad that i dont have, i dont have to have a memory of the legislature ever overturning one of my vetoes. [laughing] not many can say that. This is about politics.
