the 25th of december. thank you very much indeed for joining us. our main story. the hamas—run health ministry in gaza says at least 70 people have been killed by an air strike on a refugee camp. the israeli army said it had received reports of an attack at the maghazi camp and was reviewing the incident. hamas is designated as a terror organisation by the uk government. this report from joe inwood contains some distressing details. for the people of gaza, there is no respite. this was once a residential block — reduced to rubble. multiple generations of families are said to have been killed, seemingly caught unawares. translation: we were having dinner, when suddenly the bombing started - without any warning. in an instant, our house collapsed. the victims were taken to the nearby alaqsa hospital. in a population as young as this, children are so often the victims. this incident already has one of the highest single death tolls since this war began — and it is expected to rise. israel maintains it tries to avoid civilian casualties, but the people of gaza are paying a huge price for this war. the idf released new footage showing what it says are tunnels under the strip — used for military purposes. translation: hamas operates from civilian areas. _ it uses them to cover its terrorist activity. it is a very complex challenge that we face, and we do it well so our forces in the field achieve good results — like the brigade that found the tunnel network. while the vast majority of destruction has been in gaza, the west bank has not been spared. in the place where christianity was born, they marked the birth of christ by remembering the deaths this conflict has brought. we used here to have the lightning of the tree — christmas tree in the middle here. and we used to have a big christmas market in the playground down in the school. and we used to celebrate every night, at least for a week before. but this year we are just praying by night the holy mass, and we will pray for peace. but those prayers are yet to be answered. this has been the most devastating conflict between israelis and palestinians in modern times — and it shows no signs of ending. joe inwood, bbc news. our correspondent shaimaa khalil is in bethlehem for us. and very different mood in the city this christmas morning. goad this christmas morning. good morning- _ this christmas morning. good morning. yes, _ this christmas morning. good morning. yes, bethlehem - this christmas morning. good l morning. yes, bethlehem feels this christmas morning. (emf. morning. yes, bethlehem feels and looks very different. just echoing what we heard there from joe's report, there are no signs of celebration, there is no christmas tree. instead they were replaced by messages of solidarity for those in gaza with scouts carrying banners saying we pray for gaza. instead of that huge christmas tree that was supposed to be in the middle of manger square, children, dozens of children came together and held a huge palestinian flag but you could feel the pain, you could feel that while the people are very sad at how bethlehem feels this christmas, it feels wrong for them to celebrate. and of course we have heard from pope francis as he led the world's roman catholics, he lamented the violence and war and said that jesus' message of peace has been drowned out by the futile logic... sari... ~ , ., . sari... whether it is the patriarch it, the patriarch _ sari... whether it is the patriarch it, the patriarch of _ sari... whether it is the patriarch it, the patriarch of jerusalem, . sari... whether it is the patriarch it, the patriarch ofjerusalem, so| it, the patriarch ofjerusalem, so that he will pray for peace, for a ceasefire, but this is not enough. this needs to be an end of hostilities.— this needs to be an end of hostilities. ., ., ., ~ , ., , hostilities. for now, thank you very much indeed- _ hostilities. for now, thank you very much indeed. shaimaa _ hostilities. for now, thank you very much indeed. shaimaa khalil- hostilities. for now, thank you very| much indeed. shaimaa khaliljoining us from bethlehem. here... at midnight mass in london, the leader of the catholic church in england and wales has expressed concern about the safety and survival of catholics in the middle east. the bishop of westminster, cardinal vincent nichols, also touched on the sombre christmas atmosphere in bethlehem. emily unia reports. midnight worship in central london. a time not for revelry, but for reflection. contemplating the ongoing war in the land ofjesus' birth. bethlehem. today, a silent city. all public celebrations have been cancelled out of mourning for the dead to the terrible war ravaging parts of the holy land. cardinal nichols is worried about the remaining catholics in gaza after two parishioners there were killed by israeli snipers. i think their biggest fear and my biggest fear is that somehow they will be given the orders to vacate and just move, just go. there is nowhere safe. they want to stay. they've always stayed there. they've always looked after the needy, the 5a seriously handicapped children who were there. sometimes times of darkness help us to focus on what is really of lasting importance. and there's no doubt in my mind that the person of christ — and therefore the birth that we celebrate — is an indomitable light that shines into the human heart. with the shadow of war hanging over christmas this year, prayers for peace seem more poignant than ever. emily unia, bbc news, westminster cathedral. the king is spending his second christmas as monarch with other members of the royal family at sandringham. he will attend morning service at the church on the estate — before his christmas message is broadcast this afternoon. our royal correspondent nicholas witchell reports. god save the king! after the first full year of the king's reign — the high point of which was his coronation in may — it will be a traditional christmas day for the principal members of the royal family. they're at sandringham — the royal estate in norfolk. the king will be joined by other members of his family, but the queen isn't expected to be joined by other members of the parker—bowles family. there will doubtless be moments for them to reflect on a year which has seen continuing turbulence with the sussexes, harry and meghan — the king's youngest son and his wife are believed to be spending their christmas at their home in california with their children. at sandringham, the king will lead the family to morning service at the church on the estate before lunch, and then the broadcast of the king's christmas message. it was recorded a few days ago at buckingham palace in a notably sustainable christmas setting. the palace has pointed out that the christmas tree behind the king will be replanted, and has been decorated with biodegradable baubles. the king's christmas message will be broadcast in britain at 3:00 on television and radio. nicholas witchell, bbc news. 0ur royal correspondent daniela relphjoins us from sandringham this morning. good morning. busy day for you, busy day for the royal family, good morning. busy day for you, busy day for the royalfamily, lots good morning. busy day for you, busy day for the royal family, lots of attention on them today from all over the world.— attention on them today from all over the world. yeah, that's right. good morning. — over the world. yeah, that's right. good morning, merry _ over the world. yeah, that's right. good morning, merry christmas. | over the world. yeah, that's right. | good morning, merry christmas. it over the world. yeah, that's right. i good morning, merry christmas. it is a busy public day for the royal family today here at sandringham. it will be very much a traditional gathering here that we see every year with all senior members of the royalfamily in year with all senior members of the royal family in attendance. we will get our first royal family in attendance. we will get ourfirst sight royal family in attendance. we will get our first sight of them probably just before iiam get our first sight of them probably just before ”am when they make the five to ten minute walk from the main house here up to mary magdalene church where they worship every christmas day, led by the king and the queen, but also expect to see the queen, but also expect to see the prince and princess of is and their three children, george, charlotte and louis. they will be leading the royal pack on christmas day here at sandringham. but i think this year the mood will be a bit different from last year. last year it was just three months after the death of queen elizabeth and this was very much a family still in mourning. this year will be different, celebrated, six months after the coronation in what has been a very steady, successful year for the king in terms of what he has been doing. the coronation went smoothly, he has conducted three state visits. that mood will be different from the more reflective mood we saw last year for christmas at sandringham. qm. mood we saw last year for christmas at sandringham.— mood we saw last year for christmas at sandringham. 0k, we will “oin you later in the programme. _ at sandringham. 0k, we willjoin you later in the programme. thank - at sandringham. 0k, we willjoin you later in the programme. thank you i later in the programme. thank you very much indeed. manchester united football club has confirmed that the british billionaire sirjim ratcliffe is to buy a 25% stake in the club for around £1.25 billion. the chairman of the ineos group will now have control of the premier league club's football operations. he will also invest around £230 million in the old trafford stadium. late last night sally was updating her bbc podcast on how to buy a football club on that story. even bigger day for her today. she'll be appearing on the strictly come dancing christmas special later. # merry little christmas. # let your heart be light. she's teaming up with graziano to perform a festive foxtrot. you can watch that on bbc one and iplayer from 4.40 this afternoon. i was there in the audience with a bunch of herfriends. i was there in the audience with a bunch of her friends. she i was there in the audience with a bunch of herfriends. she is incredible, they all are. the other guys performing and dancing, as well. a really special show to enjoy after your christmas lunch. she worked so hard on that and it is good to see it all paying off. carol can join us with the weather. that's what we need on christmas morning, i carol! so we have a little present for you, 0k? mummy can open it, or your carers. first on the list today is robin, who had a brain injury at birth and has complex medical needs. oh, look at that, look at that! yeah, it's really kind, it's really thoughtful, it's really nice, because we will still be here at christmas, probably, for sure. so it'sjust nice that somebody thinks of the kids that aren't at home. is that all right? good girl. happy christmas. take care, sweetheart. thank you. that's all right. nigel started delivering christmas presents after one event 15 years ago. he was called out to a young boy who'd broken his leg. we said to his family and to him that we wanted to go to hospital. he didn't want to go to hospital on christmas eve. purely the fact that santa wouldn't find him. so after the job, i sat in the ambulance and thought, wow, there must be hundreds of children in the same position, scared to go to hospital on christmas eve because they won't get presents. afternoon. hello, bailey. we've got you a bag of presents. next on the list, bailey, who has cerebral palsy, and is recovering from complex spinal surgery. all these ones are for you, 0k. it's been a bit tricky because i've missed my other daughter's christmas play. obviously, bailey's not been at school, so she's missed out on a lot of christmassy things at school. but we've just sort of had to deal with it, to be honest, make sure bailey is better. so, a ward full of happy children. over the years, nigel has delivered almost 30,000 presents to children in hospital. so what would this giver of gifts like for his christmas present? i don't know. i've never really thought about myself in receiving a present, or... i don't know. it's always about. ..giving to others, so i don't know. but after a bit more thought... well, my ideal christmas present at the minute would be man united to win the league. but i don't think that's going to happen unless i'm on santa's good boy list. but who knows, who knows? big man united fan? massive, massive. so, time for a quick surprise. where are we going, guys? look, we're in the middle of nowhere, look. nigel thinks he's being driven to the bbc breakfast studio. wow! what?! are you ready? nigel... hiya, nice to meet you. i'm jason. hi, jason, hiya. welcome. thank you very much, wow. wow, lovely surprise. something tells me - you're a big united fan. massive. nigel and his family are given a quick tour. then a moment with the manchester united manager, erik ten hag, and a shirt signed by the whole team. please. 0h, lovely, thank you. i will say merry christmas. merry christmas back. 0h, lovely. that's amazing. ready, ready, ready. oh, wow! and last, a chance to meet the players. wow, look at this. this guy's marcus rashford. this is like a surprise for me today, to come here and see my heroes — especially you. nice surprise. yeah! are you shy? shall we take him home? want to come with me? laughter. do you know what? i keep looking at things, and the logos, and the man united sign, thinking, i'm actually here. yeah, it's a dream, it's a dream. amazing. sometimes dreams can come true. a small thank you to a remarkable man who has helped so many children in hospital at christmas. what a great guy. fantastic and great to see him having a lovely start to his christmas. happy christmas to nigel and family if you are watching. lovely to have you with us on christmas day. a christmas carol written almost a century ago has found a new audience after it was discovered by accident. called christmas eve, the song evokes the ringing of bells in the town of barnsley during the festive season. cathy killick has the story. # glad tidings of the saviour bring # peace reigneth as ye gaily ring # ring on, ring on # ring on # while the merry breezes sing of christmas bells.# composed 90 years ago, this is, as far as we know, the first public performance of this beautiful carol. it was published in the barnsley chronicle in 1933, but was recently rediscovered by michael hardy when he was researching the history of barnsley town hall. the carol was published the same month the town hall opened, and survives on crumbly pages in the newspaper archive. it was almost a full page of the newspaper and i weren't expecting to see that. i've seen articles about the town hall and adverts for christmas. this kind of stood out. i've not seen anything like this before in the paper. michael showed it to his colleague, tegwin roberts, who's also a musician. a day later, she sang it on the town hall staircase. # the chime of bells inspires the midnight breeze...# she then put a video on youtube with scenes of barnsley christmases past. it went down a storm, and prompted more research into the writer — one arthur godfrey. he was born in barnsley in the 1870s. we thought he'd be quite well known, so we had a look through the paper to see whether he'd published other stuff. and actually didn't find much. what we did find was that he was a glass—bottle—maker in barnsley. he started age 12 and he worked throughout his life in that industry, but obviously was a really talented musician alongside that. # glad tidings of a saviour bring...# it felt quite emotional, hearing something that i'd found on a piece of paper being sung, and sung in the town hall, as well. it feels really special. and i think for me as a singer, songs, they come alive when you sing them. and also to have the music published alongside the words — quite often you get words published and no tune — so to be able to know what the composer intended at the time, and to be able to then recreate that, it's really, really special. as the carol becomes more widely heard, it's hoped choirs will learn the harmonies, and it canjoin the dozens of christmas songs traditionally sung in south yorkshire. a barnsley contribution from the past brought to life in the present. # ..sing of christmas bells.# cathy killick, bbc news, barnsley. round of applause, rightly so, what a lovely story. we will have more familiar carols later, we will be joined by some of the pupils from seymour road primary school in manchester who will belt out some classics for you to start your christmas morning. christmas is a time for celebration for most of us, but for others, it can highlight feelings of loneliness and isolation. earlier this month, we met age uk volunteer barbara. after losing her husband mike 18 years ago, she stopped celebrating christmas. but recently, barbara began volunteering, and it's changed her life, as jayne mccubbin has been finding out. at the start of december, barbara told us that when her husband mike had died, her life seemed to stop. their last christmas together, 18 years ago, was the last time she'd put up christmas decorations. that was my husband, mike. aw. i've got you with me, mike. but barbara turned grief into good. if i hadn't had gone into voluntary work, i think i would have sat in that chairandjust give up. yeah, it felt funny. i don't know why i didn't want to put that big tree up again. itjust didn't feel the same any more. no, it didn't feel the same, no. i think that struck a nerve with a lot of people. so i want to read a message to you. is that 0k? yeah, yeah. it's from a lady called linda. "i lost my husband, steve, three years ago today. and i am watching barbara right now on your show. and i've just applied to volunteer at our local food bank. i just want to say she is an inspiration." oh, that's — oh, how lovely. you've had an impact, you've inspired people. yeah, yeah. so we want to do something special for you. come on through. take a seat. bring your knitting through, come on. barbara's story touched people. come on in. one person in particular wanted to send their very best wishes. i'm going to dim the lights, everybody, 0k? hi, there, barbara. just wanted to take this time to say congratulations to you. you haven't put up decorations, apparently, for 18 years. that's since your husband mike died. and yet you've turned your back on your own grief and are helping others to deal with the situation that you've been dealing with for quite a while. so ijust wanted to say, i send you lots of love, god bless, and keep up the good work with age uk. god bless you. isn't that nice? that's gorgeous. oh, thank you. so, you know what we've got to do now? yeah. 18 years is too long. are you ready to put up some decs? yes. what a gorgeous colour. 0h! with the change of reign from queen elizabeth to king charles came an inevitable shuffling of titles and positions within the family. and this has been the year for those members to make their new roles their own. as prince and princess of wales, william and catherine have their roles and responsibilities largely mapped out for them. but over the past year, their priorities away from the pomp and pageantry of their dayjobs have continued to develop. what does home mean to you? home is feeling safe and protected in my own bed. injune, prince william launched an ambitious project which aims to show that it is possible to end homelessness. over the next five years, homewards will focus on six areas of the uk, putting together local action plans to, in the campaign's words, make homelessness rare, brief and unrepeated. i first visited a homelessness shelter when i was 11 with my mother. the visits we made together left a deep and lasting impression. i met so many extraordinary people and listened to so many heartbreaking personal stories. too many people have found themselves without a stable and permanent place to call home. so i am pleased to stand here today at the start of our path to ending homelessness. hello, judi. how lovely to see you. hampton court palace injune and the inaugural queen's reading room festival. michael redgrave playing king lear at stratford. what started as a lockdown list of camilla's nine favourite books has grown into a global charity, as the then duchess told writers gathered at clarence house. you open our eyes to others' experiences and remind us that we're not alone. human beings have always needed the connection of literature. its wisdom as well as its sheer escapism. in today's challenging climate, we need it more than ever. the princess of wales demonstrated her musical talents this year for eurovision. but her focus has largely been in places like this. described as her life's work, catherine continues to highlight the importance of the early years. shaping us was launched injanuary, a campaign described as being about raising public awareness rather than politics or policy. people often ask me why i focus my time on early childhood. well, the answer is because i care deeply about making a positive difference in helping the most vulnerable and supporting those who are most in need. here, there's lots of people who give up their time and there are lots of volunteers who come and help out. and joining mum at christmas, her own three children, helping out at a baby bank. if you think about what you would like to play with. this is a big guy! hooter blasts. a spectacular backdrop for a dragon boat race. prince william, in the white t—shirt, never one to shy away from competition. he was in singapore, along with stars of the stage and screen who walked a green rather than red carpet to promote the earthshot prize, created by the prince and now in its third year. applause. all: earthshot! it aims to reward and promote those innovators and entrepreneurs who are actively finding solutions to environmental challenges. these, the real stars of the show. before the ceremony, the prince spent time with this year's nominees, five of whom would win £1 million apiece to scale up their ideas. we've seen an incredible bunch of people come through again. and i think from the first year, we can quantify a bit more of the impact. and in the first year alone, we've managed to directly impact positively 1.5 million people. we protected about 2.1 million hectares of ocean, upcycled 35,000 tonnes of waste, 40,000 tonnes of c02. and we're going to do more. arriving in dubai. king charles has championed environmental issues for decades, and there were concerns he may have felt compelled to take a backseat on the issue when he ascended the throne. instead, he now has an even greater platform from which to speak and intends to continue doing so. his speech to global leaders, which opened the un climate summit, was blunt and challenged those present to act now. in 2050, our grandchildren won't be asking what we said. they will be living with the consequences of what we did or didn't do. so if we act together to safeguard our precious planet, the welfare of all our people will surely follow. injuly, the coronation of king charles ii! was marked in edinburgh. he was presented with the honours of scotland at st giles' cathedral. by the symbol of this crown, we pledge our loyalty in trusting that you reign as our king in the service of all your people. in receiving this crown, i so promise by god's help. the themes which underpinned the service at westminster abbey were in evidence here too. community and inclusivity. we unite with people of all faiths and beliefs in thanksgiving. not my king! all: not my king! outside the calm and tranquillity of the cathedral, just as had been the case in london, there were noisy protests by those who would wish to end the monarchy. since the passing of the late queen, the republican movement has become more vocal and more visible. but in this coronation year, the most personal attacks on family members were contained within the pages of a best—selling royal memoir. prince harry headed back home to california as soon as the service at the abbey had finished. his relationship with the family further strained by the frenzy around spare, published at the beginning of the year. book shops opened at midnight, and although copies had been accidentally leaked the previous week in spain, the extraordinary level of detail harry revealed about himself and his family guaranteed this would fly off the shelves. translated into 16 languages, a global audience lapped up intimate details. the most explosive, a physical altercation between him and his brother, laying bare the rift between them. according to harry, one of the lowest points came at kensington palace in 2019. william is said to have called meghan, "difficult, rude and abrasive." things escalated and according to the book, he, meaning william... prince harry: ..grabbed me - by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. i landed on the dog's bowl, which cracked under my back. the pieces cutting into me. i lay there for a moment dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out. "come on, hit me. "you'll feel better if you hit me." "do what?" "come on. we always used to fight. "you'll feel better if you hit me." "n03. their father largely escaped criticism. the same cannot be said for queen camilla. according to the book, harry and william asked their father not to marry her, fearing she would become their wicked stepmother. private family moments were revealed, including just after the funeral of prince philip in 2021, when the then prince charles allegedly said this to his sons, "please, boys. "don't make my final years a misery." his late mother, diana, is a constant presence in the book, his love for her and the struggle to cope after her death. hi, guys. morning. another recurring theme was his antipathy towards the british press. in court case after court case, he's demonstrated his determination to seek retribution for wrongs he believes certain newspapers have made against him. we love you, harry! he accused mirror group newspapers of using unlawful methods to obtain stories about him, including phone hacking. and six months after appearing in the witness box, a judge agreed, and prince harry won £140,000 in damages. he described the result as vindicating and affirming, but said the mission continues. harry's visits to the uk this year were brief. his wife meghan stayed away. the nearest she came to visiting the uk was a trip to germany to support her husband's initiative, the invictus games, which this year were held in dusseldorf. the year ended in the same way it had begun, with controversy over the sussexes and a royal book. ever since meghan publicly discussed an alleged conversation between harry and his family over the colour of their at the time unborn baby's skin, accusations of racism had been levelled at the royal family. according to a dutch translation of endgame, the royals involved in the conversation were the king and the princess of wales. neither the palace nor the sussexes chose to offer any comment. # happy birthday, happy birthday... in november, king charles reached his 75th birthday, an age at which most people would be trying to ministry in gaza says at least seventy people have been killed by an air strike on a refugee camp. the israeli army said it had received reports of an attack at the maghazi camp and was reviewing the incident. hamas is designated as a terror organisation by the uk government. this report from joe inwood contains some distressing details. for the people of gaza, there is no respite. this was once a residential block — reduced to rubble. multiple generations of families are said to have been killed, seemingly caught unawares. translation: we were having dinner, when suddenly the bombing started - without any warning. in an instant, our house collapsed. the victims were taken to the nearby alaqsa hospital. in a population as young as this, children are so often the victims. this incident already has one of the highest single death tolls since this war began — and it is expected to rise. israel maintains it tries to avoid civilian casualties, but the people of gaza are paying a huge price for this war. the idf released new footage showing what it says are tunnels under the strip — used for military purposes. translation: hamas operates from civilian areas. _ it uses them to cover its terrorist activity. it is a very complex challenge that we face, and we do it well so our forces in the field achieve good results — like the brigade that found the tunnel network. while the vast majority of destruction has been in gaza, the west bank has not been spared. in the place where christianity was born, they marked the birth of christ by remembering the deaths this conflict has every night, at least for a week before. but this year we are just praying by night the holy mass, and we will pray for peace. but those prayers are yet to be answered. this has been the most been cancelled out of mourning for the dead to the terrible war ravaging parts of the holy land. cardinal nichols is worried about the remaining catholics in gaza after two parishioners there were killed by israeli snipers. i think their biggest fear and my biggest fear is that somehow they will be given the orders to vacate and just move, just go. there is nowhere safe. they want to stay. they've always stayed there. they've always looked after the needy, the 54 seriously handicapped children who are there. sometimes times of darkness help us to focus on what is really of lasting encouraging us to take inspiration from abroad over the festive season. but if you're worried about making mistakes with your christmas lunch today — take heart. after her latest programme aired, nigella shared these festive fluffs. here we go. and. . .action! 0h... laughter. i suppose i have to do that again! don't you always have a... straining. 0h! laughter. cut there. laughter. sorry! now we all feel a bit better about mix—ups in the kitchen today. i've been catching up with nigella about her last—minute plans, the inspiration for her latest programme, and whether she'll be using the mee—cro—wah—vay this year. nigella lawson. merry christmas to you. and to you. you're encouraging us this year to think about an amsterdam christmas... yes. ..in your bbc programme. can you think of any little tips you can offer us from what you've seen happened in holland, which might give us something easy for christmas day? finding inspiration out of the ingredients, and i think that's really what cooking is about. at christmastime, especially, ifind this kind of assemblyjob number — especially one that you can do in advance — a complete life—saver. now, i don't know that, you know, this is the best time to say to someone that you should be changing your menu for christmas day, but i have got some really gorgeous speculaas, which is a dutch gingerbread, which you can make and hang from the tree or — and this is what i would urge people towards — is that you don't need to ice them, you can just cut them out and you will find that they make the best cheese biscuit. and i think cheese has a hallowed place at christmas. just like christmas cake is wonderful with sharp cheese. what's christmas like for you this year? what are your plans? oh, the normal — eating, eating, eating. cooking, eating, or being cooked for? oh, no, no — cooking and eating. and what's on the menu? well, for christmas lunch itself, i'm very trad — i always stick to the same that i'm used to. that turkey, sausages, red cabbage, parsnips, roast potatoes, sprouts, christmas pudding. so... obviously, bread sauce and cranberry sauce. so i'm fairly trad then, and then i... it's really... it's really after that, i like... i think tradition needs to be mixed up with sometimes having something a bit new — not so dazzlingly new that you feel anxious, but new enough to, i suppose, to just give a little bit of oomph. now...chives and parsley again. it's like a salad on top of my mussels. and these beautiful fronds of dill. don't mind me. i think there is something about christmas — we sometimes force ourselves to do things, eat things that maybe, if we stood back and looked at it, thought about it, we wouldn't actually choose to do. well, maybe. i mean, i draw the line to say, for example, i don't mind how many people don't enjoy brussels sprouts. i wouldn't dream of taking them off the menu, not only because i happen to adore brussels sprouts, but also, because i can't make it compute in my head. how can it be christmas lunch if you don't have brussels sprouts? now, i'm not going to go round door to door to make sure everyone is having brussels sprouts for christmas dinner, but i nevertheless would not be temperamentally able to axe them from the menu myself. you're not going to insist upon it? no. i'm very easygoing about what people do, and i think they should be easygoing on themselves too. there's enough pressure at this time of year without making yourself feel like you've failed in some way because you haven't done what your mother—in—law always did, or you haven't done what you were brought up with. we inherit traditions, but it's important to create our own as well. you know, when we said we were going to be talking to you at christmas, some people said, you've got to ask her about meecro—wah—vay, what you famously called the microwave meecro—wah—vay on television. now, i'm aiming for quite a solid match at this stage, but i still need a bit of milk full fat, which i've warmed in the meecro—wah—vay. i wasn't quite aware i'd said it because that's what i call it at home. and what's quite interesting is that a lot of people got in touch with me, to tell me what theirfamily mispronunciations are, because so many families do have that — they have a way of... so they mispronounce a word either because the child and the family could never say it properly, and that's become part of their family language. orjust because they make jokes and they stick. so will you be saying on christmas day, "i'm just going to put these sprouts in the meecro—wah—vay"? i'm not. it's made me quite self—conscious now. i tend to refer to it as the you—know—what now. so are you spreadsheets and timers and computer programmes to get it all perfect? no, i do — i have a number of timers. it is a bit — sometimes ifeel i'm in nasa, as a lot of things go off beeping, and i do have a list of what i meant to be doing, when. i can't hand on heart say i always stick to it, but i try not to get more than an hour wrong. we'll all see you there. that's lovely to chat. cheers to you. merry christmas. nigella's amsterdam christmas is available now in the bbc iplayer. lynn has been in touch. she could probably do with using the meecro—wah—vay because she got up early and her turkey hasn't yet defrosted so if you are going round to lynn baker's for lunch, go back to lynn baker's for lunch, go back to bed, give yourself a bit longer because it will be late. after the first full year of the king's reign, it is likely to be a traditional christmas day for way of cutting ties with russia, who celebrate according to the orthodox calendar. but with the country at war, for many people there will be little cause for celebration. our ukraine correspondent james waterhouse reports. christmas in kupyansk is a celebration in name only. children were evacuated from this front line city, and only 5000 people remain. it used to be five times that. siren sounds days are punctuated with artillery shells and sirens. life continues for those who've stayed. but it's a tense existence. translation: we all live in fear of death when we go to work. i we don't know what can happen, whether russia will strike with rockets. we all live on the edge. we don't know whether we'll come back home alive. 17—year—old sophia has lived through both occupation and liberation. her dad is fighting, and she's not impressed with her country's fate being determined by skeptical western politicians. translation: perhaps they should | come here and see for themselves| what the situation is like, and how much the aid is needed. if there's no help for ukraine now, russia will take its aggression further. the russians are eight kilometres to the east of the city. but what ukraine's military is worried about is them pushing once more up to the oskil river, before making another push. and that is the point kyiv is trying to make. if western support was to further slow down, then russia won't stop there. it still wants the whole of ukraine. the briefest of pauses for a christmas prayer. large gatherings are dangerous here when russian drones loiter above. instead of these troops forcing out their invaders, it is them repelling constant attacks. translation: it's day and night. there are no breaks. it's 24/7. we have more targets, so we need more shells. they throw lots of men and machinery into battle. they don't pity anything. it's hard to sell a victory, which seems distant. ukraine's struggle to contain western doubt has left it with a new year looking far from certain. james waterhouse, bbc news. james joins us now form kharkiv in east ukraine. second wartime christmas for people there. interesting they are celebrating christmas on significantly in a cultural sense. ukraine is going through a real cultural shift as it tries to eradicate russian influences with its language, for example, large proportions of ukraine use russian as their first language. and many are trying to switch to ukrainian. when you look at religion, when you look at the ukrainian orthodox church, which has ties to moscow, we have seen the church evicted from some major sites in the country. and of course we have the date of christmas. in the more immediate sense you are not feeling it yet. certainly in cities like kharkiv or and kupyansk, where we were, we are not seeing large celebrations. large gatherings are a rarity. in some cases dangerous, because they can be targeted by russian results. what we are seeing is president zelensky trying to drag his country in a direction of travel. he has used his christmas address to try and install hope in people. but there is a political and military reality to this war. and the next few help both israel and ukraine. we can also provide palestinians with humanitarian aid. but there is increasing scepticism, there is increasing doubt. we are seeing new governments in europe, for example, who don't want to provide ukraine with more support. but when we ring kupyansk yesterday, we went to a market. —— when we were in kupyansk. for the first time in a long time we could feel the tension. we weren't welcome. people were deeply suspicious. it shows the weight people have to live with. the weight people have to live with. the weight of uncertainty, whether they will be killed that day through an artillery strike, for example, whether somebody they love will be killed fighting on the front line, that starts to play out. there is only so much people can take. but ukraine still sees this as a simple binary choice to either keep fighting for its survival as a country, or to fold and allow russia to pull it back into moscow's orbit. because you are going to hear a lot of speculation, a lot of talk about whether ukraine should enter some kind of ceasefire or peace deal with russia. and the argument ukraine makes is that vladimir putin won't want to stop there. that forecast. it is mostly going to be on high ground in the north of scotland. you may see some of it getting down to lower levels. but for the bulk of the country it is going to be cloudy with some rain. tomorrow though, drier, much brighter, but also cooler. wednesday is looking pretty wet and windy. what we have got at the moment is a fair bit of cloud across much of the country. that cloud is producing some showers, or indeed some reign. we also have some weather fronts responsible for this. this one is producing light and patchy rain. it will pep up during the morning. showery outbreaks of rain across north—west england and northern ireland pushing into scotland. it is this that will engage with the cold air and produce some rain, snow or other, mostly above 200 metres. having said that we could still see five to eight centimetres above 200 metres. meanwhile, the rain peps up across wales and moves across central, southern and eastern parts of england. quite a windy day today but nothing like yesterday. temperatures, four in lerwick and aberdeen, ten in belfast, iii temperatures, four in lerwick and aberdeen, ten in belfast, 1a in london. through this evening and overnight of the rain clears from the south east. we will see a few of those showers linger in the north of the country. but there will also be clear skies. the country. but there will also be clearskies. underthose the country. but there will also be clear skies. under those clear skies it will be a colder night than last night. the risk of ice are on untreated surfaces across parts of scotland, where in places temperatures will fall below freezing. as we had three tomorrow we start with some early cloud and showers across northern england and southern scotland. that will give way to drier conditions and some sunshine. a weather front approaching from the south—west will introduce some cloud, turning the sunshine hazy initially, then it will become cloudy. the rain arrives in the south—west with strengthening winds. temperatures are still cold in the north, milder in the south but not as mild as it is going to beat today. then we pick up that rain on tuesday evening and overnight in the south—west. during the course of wednesday, look out bush's northwards. we will see some snow overnight across the pennines, the lake district, and a lot of rain. windy, 50 to 60 mph winds across the south of coast england and the english channel. expect water and spray on the roads. snow across scotland. once again it is in the north. predominantly in the hills above 200 metres. we could see ten to 15 centimetres. some of it will come down to lower levels as we go through the course of the day. 6 degrees and aberdeen will feel cold. we are still looking at 30 degrees further south. that is fairly mild. beyond that it does remain unsettled. u nsettled. we are unsettled. we are going to be dodging showers for those christmas walks. certainly todayis for those christmas from the post—war baby boom right through the swinging sixties. now, they're back, kicking off a new series with a christmas special. celestina olulode reports. this forthcoming christmas will be my last upon this earth. sister, that is a very doleful prediction. and a clue, perhaps, that major change is on its way in this snippet of the call the midwife christmas special. the series itself has been a staple of the small screen for over a decade. music like this, performed by the bbc*s concert orchestra plays a key part in the production. so we've gone behind the scenes to see the recording of the christmas soundtrack, at the very same place the beatles produced some of their hits. sorry, i've been a little distracted today. actress laura maine plays nurse sheila turner. i've never seen this part of the process. and call the midwife is made to such a high standard standard and with so much love and care and attention. we know that we're lucky to still be making this show and that it's so appreciated. it's been absolutely incredible to be part of call the midwife from the beginning, and a day like today, when you get to see another side of this special programme that's really sort of changed so many people's lives. what about the people devoted to your care? co—star rebecca gethings joined the cast last year. sister veronica is a bit naughty, but in a good way. she wants to do the right thing, and she's a bit robust in her method sometimes, but she doesn't mean to step on toes. she just wants to get stuff done. and if she has to tell a pork pie to do it, she will. when we walked down the stairs into studio 2, itjust really hit me. firstly, the wall of sound. i mean, it pulls all the heartstrings. but also, just the history of that room and all the people that i admire who've played there, and how lucky i was to be stood there. i'm getting a bit emotional now. but, yes, iwent, i couldn't stop the tears. it was really beautiful. award winning composer maurizio malagnini has been creating music for the show for almost ten years. in this new season, some of the midwife have an attitude. they're a bit stronger against some of the topics about, for example, pay rise. they want to have a pay rise, or they want to have their rights aired and they are thinking about strikes. i think in terms of music, it's been a journey to evolve the style from the 50s to the 60s, and now we are almost going into the 70s. hello. happy christmas! hello. what can i do for you, mrs turner? set in 1969, this season depicts a very different time to the first ever episode set in the east london area of poplar. it's a much more colourful, glossy world than when we first started, and that was 1957, was the first episode. and we've only moved forward — you know, it may feel very different tonally — but but we've only ever moved forward one year with each series. but we are seeing in this series in particular poverty and some desperate cases that one imagines, you know, might not happen today. but i think that's the thing that call the midwife does by looking back at the past, we can see those mistakes being made again and again and hopefully learn. i spent the entire taxi ride... and for those itching to know what happens in this season, here's a little clue. i'm not sure if i'm allowed to say it, but we do — i think it's been out there — but we leave poplar for a little bit, and adventure ensues. call the midwife is on tonight at quarter past eight. we are going to zoom the midwife. there are lots of real midwives on shift. i'm joined by rebecca vince—jackson, charlotte dwight and nicole ferrier from the liverpool women's hospital. good morning. merry christmas! how are you doing? how is it being overnight? it’s are you doing? how is it being overnight?— thank you. lovely to see you. a christmas carol written almost a century ago has found a new audience after it was discovered by accident. called christmas eve , the song evokes the ringing of bells in the town of barnsley during the festive season. cathy killick has the story. # glad tidings of the saviour bring # peace reigneth as ye gaily ring # ring on, ring on # ring on # while the merry breezes sing of christmas bells.# composed 90 years ago, this is, as far as we know, the first public performance of this beautiful carol. it was published in the barnsley chronicle in 1933, but was recently rediscovered by michael hardy when he was researching the history of barnsley town hall. the carol was published the same month the town hall opened, and survives on crumbly pages in the newspaper archive. it was almost a full page of the newspaper and i weren't expecting to see that. i've seen articles about the town hall and adverts for christmas. this kind of stood out cos i've not seen anything like this before in the paper. michael showed it to his colleague, tegwin roberts, who's also a musician. a day later, she sang it on the town hall staircase. # the chime of bells inspires the midnight breeze...# she then put a video on youtube with scenes of barnsley christmases past. it went down a storm, and prompted more research into the writer — one arthur godfrey. he was born in barnsley in the 1870s. we thought he'd be quite well known, so we had a look through the paper to see whether he'd published other stuff and actually didn't find much. what we did find was that he was a glass—bottle—maker in barnsley. he started age 12 and he worked throughout his life in that industry, but obviously was a really talented musician alongside that. # glad tidings of a saviour bring...# it felt quite emotional, hearing something that we are here on bbc one until 8:50am. this is where we say goodbye to viewers on the bbc news channel. thank you forjoining live from
