Local historian Everett Fly points to a cedar fence post on the northern boundary of the site of the Winters-Jackson cemetery, an African American graveyard on the northeast side that dates back to the late 1800s, on Thursday, May 31, 2018. With a scientist's background and a designer's lens, Ayaka Yamashita has found her focus – Harvard Gazette


showcasing some of Harvard’s stellar graduates.
Before enrolling at the Graduate School of Design (GSD), Ayaka Yamashita had earned degrees in agro-informatics and global health, founded a nonprofit in Southeast Asia, published a book, and been named a Fulbright Scholar as well as “an upcoming Japanese woman contributing to the 21st century.” Born deaf in one ear, she had faced disparities in communicating with other students and teachers as a child; from a young age, she grew sensitive to the lived experience of disability and difference.
Studying design, she thought, might be a way to understand human difference through various perspectives and mediums, an opportunity to generate fresh narratives and solutions. ....

A remodeled midcentury modern home in Berkeley, CA, has quickly sold for $4.37 million.
It first came on the market in early October 2020 for $4.35 million, but the sellers trimmed the price to $4,295,000 later in the month. Two months after that, the home wound up selling for over asking price, at $4.37 million. The property was one of the most expensive listings in the college town. ....
