Hi, everyone. Im frank mallicoat. Im michelle griego. The train [ signal breakup ] [ please stand by ] [ no audio ] reporter this happened in between the west oakland 12th and lake merritt stations. Thats the cross where all trains converge. Getting around it was a mess. People had to switch trains and get around and endure long delays all day long. The problem was a broken component of the mechanism that switches the train. Their initial preliminary findings is that something struck this receiver coil and damaged it. We still dont know what. It could be a train, a maintenance vehicle, equipment, crew members, so we need to figure out exactly what struck this coil and damaged it. Reporter bart crews found the problem right before the peak morning commute in the earlymorning hours until about 9 30 this morning tried to fix this piece right away. Reporter people were scared running away. The chp officer held the older womans hand and escorted them away. Others were hiding behind cars. Looks like they are opening the large door. Reporter after he realized he was surrounded, the suspect released the first hostage around 2 30. The owner of the gas station known as jack. I have family and i would be terrified if my dad was in there. So im glad he is out. Reporter an hour later the suspect released the second hostage the manager of the gas station. At the same time, the suspect surrendered and came out of the garage with both hands up. He had a cigarette in his mouth. Officers detained him, dragged him away to make sure no one else was inside.
