Weve got a big story to start with this morning. That is this morning a suspect is in custody in that murder mystery in the Nations Capital. The manhunt came to an end exactly a week after the bodies of a businessman, his wife son, and their housekeeper were discovered inside a burning home. Nbc National CorrespondentPeter Alexander has more on this. What can you tell us . Reporter matt good morning. Those dramatic developments taking place overnight. Now in Police Custody here in washington, d. C. Daron dylan wint Police Picking him up after a manhunt. And Police Picking up two vehicles. One wint was in and a separate box truck they found 10,000 cash inside. This morning the massive manhunt for first degree murder suspect Daron Dylan Wint is over. Police taking wint into custody overnight in this northeast washington neighborhood. Law enforcement sources tell our station wrc that they followed a white chevy cruze. Officers pulling over the chevy arresting wint without incident. Wrc reports three unidentified women were also in the car with wint. Overnight investigators were combing through the chevy and this truck nearby. Wints search took them from brooklyn to new york where they believe he traveled before returning to d. C. Wint tracks him using a phone found in his girlfriends possession when police interviewed her thursday. She told them wint was returning to d. C. Where they used separate phone records to track him down. The question remains this morning did wint target the savopoulos family . Police say he once worked for Savvas Savopoulos business american iron works. And one of wints relatives were fired from the company. Do you feel that wint was acting alone . We have not ruled out others could be involved. Reporter in 2010 according to Police Records, wint himself was arrested outside of american iron works after he was carrying a machete but charges were dropd. He was also charged with assault three times found guilty in one of the cases. And had three unrelated separate orders against him. I cant believe that he did it and i met him many, many times. I do not think hes the one. Reporter that former attorney of wints telling us that he said wint would not hurt a fly saying specifically hes the kind of guy you wouldnt mind your grandmother having lunch with. This morning wint is in custody accused of first degree murder. Matt hes likely to make his first appearance in court later this afternoon. All right. Peter, thank you very much. The crimes this guy is accused of committing. The fact he had to be considered extremely dangerous. He knew hed been identified so that cliche he had nothing to lose they did this quickly. They had to matt. This guys history goes back as peter was just telling us hes got an extensive criminal history. This is the same person who his attorneys said he wouldnt hurt a fly. He threatened to kill to shoot his parents. He told a woman that he would stab her to death and her young child saying i know how to use a knife very well. Im not afraid of the police. So this is someone Law Enforcement had to get in custody as quick as they could. Now the question is is there a second or even a third person involved . And other than interrogating this suspect, how are police going about trying to figure that out . Well you know one of the great things in this case was the dna. Weve all heard it was dna from the pizza crust. But if you think of that crime scene, matt youve got four dead bodies in there, a fire going on Fire Department pouring water in there and yet some good detective, atf agent was able to go in find that pizza box and say look, two pizzas. This guy probably didnt buy pizza for the people that hes torturing. He got it for himself. So they were able to find the dna. Perhaps they have dna of a second suspect, they just have no match it. And again were looking now at something that does not appear to be totally random because of this suspects history with this family and the Company Owned by this family. Exactly. Exactly. Weve got a history here of why he would have targeted this specific house and neighborhood. I think the people in the vicinity has to take solace theres no one on the street like this still. But as the police suggested there still may be accomplices out there. This would have been a hard crime for one person to pull off. There may be more to come. Thanks again. Former defense secretary robert gates says the time has come for his organization to reconsider its ban on gay troupe leaders. Pete williams has been following the story. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning. The message is a blunt one. If the boy scouts dont change the policy on gay scout leaders themselves on their own terms, itll be forced on them in a way they wont like. The battle of the boy scouts reporter after a bruising battle two years ago led to ending the ban on admitting young gay people to the scouts robert gates, the former defense secretary whos president of the boy scouts says the Organization Must now accept that Public Attitudes are changing even more quickly. He says the current policy that still bans gay scout leaders will not survive. We must deal with the world as it is. Not as we might wish it would be. The status quo in our movements membership standard cannot be sustained. Reporter the Greater New York council is already defying the ban. Just last month hiring an openly gay eagle scout to be a summer camp leader. 15 years ago the Supreme Court upheld the scouts right to exclude james dale when he came out as gay. Now gates says the scouts might lose a similar case and james dale agrees. Even if you dont exclude a young person when they become 18 years old theyre not good enough anymore . Thats the wrong message for the boy scouts of america. Reporter he says they should respect the thoughts of local churches. He oversaw the policy change on gays in the military when he was secretary of defense and that experience impresses some local scouting officials. This is not what we expected but leaders lead. Bob gates is used to leading. This is not a guy used to sitting on the back of the seat and rubbing his hands and wondering what to do next. Reporter such a big change would have to be approved by a vote of the scout leadership. The Mormon Church says it will carefully consider how such a change would affect its centurylong association with the scouts. Pete williams thank you very much. Not good news because officials are now saying it could take months to determine what caused that Huge Oil Spill in southern california. Nbc ease Hallie Jackson has the latest. Good morning. How did this spill happen in the first place . This morning Unanswered Questions about what caused this pipeline to break. They will take that piece of pipe. They will have it inspected by a third party. Let the engineers determine. That could take weeks and months to get that information back. Reporter plains all american says it inspects the pipe every three years. Above and beyond what the federal government requires. The company now on the hook for cleanup costs. Where oil is spilled, a company will have to pay money for the recovery of that oil regardless of whether they took good care of the pipeline or not. Reporter so far crews have recovered about 10,000 gallons of oily water. Right now weve got five to six foot swells 20 mileanhour winds. You can feel it on this boat rocking back and forth. 17 boats are working to corral the oil slick with more booms arriving today. High above, nbcs Miguel Almaguer puts it in perspective. Environmentalists say the true impact on not just the environment but animals will take several days if not weeks.
