Skiing and snowboarding are said to be great cardiovascular exercise that can help burn calories and lose weight. Experts say it also strengthens your lower body muscles, improves flexibility, engages core muscles and it also boosts your mood!

Minnesota briefs: Two Iron Range school districts add mountain bike teams

Two school districts on the Iron Range plan to start mountain biking teams in part of what s been a decadelong explosion in the sport in Minnesota since the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails opened in 2010.
Mountain bike teams in the Minnesota High School Cycling League are being formed at Rock Ridge and Hibbing school districts, with the Rock Ridge team in Virginia being a composite team that draws from schools on the east side of the Iron Range.
Mountain biking has exploded in popularity in Minnesota since the trail system in Crosby was built. In 2012, the first year of the cycling league for high school and middle schoolers, there were 151 participants from 16 teams. This past year, despite COVID-19 restrictions, there were 2,135 participants from 80 teams spanning 125 schools. ....

WRESTLING: Moved from Xcel Energy Center to high schools TBA
The state wrestling tournament will not be held at its annual location, Xcel Energy Center. Instead, MSHSL officials are considering multiple high school sites to host it March 25-27. All three classes would have competition on one day, and four teams from each class will advance to the final venue.
The top two teams from each section go to the state preliminaries, and compete against the top two teams from another section. One team of the four advances to the rest of the tournament. For the individual tournament, there will be four wrestlers in each weight class that advance from the sectional round. Eight of the remaining wrestlers in each weight class gets knocked down to two, with eight final wrestlers left at the state venue to compete for a title. ....

ELY Senior Jasper Johnston and sophomore Zoe Devine each blew away their respective competition during the Ely Skiathlon, held last Thursday at Hidden Valley.
Devine had strong support from teammates Phoebe Helm, Ava Skustad, and Julia Schwinghamer as the girls racked up 391 points to take first in the team competition against Carlton-Esko-Cromwell and Two Harbors. C-E-C was second with 381 points.
The boys were edged by C-E-C, 386-384.
Johnston, who had missed some earlier meets as he competed in Midwest regional competition, was in usual form during the combined freestyle and classic competition in Ely on Jan. 28, finishing the course in just 20:15, a full minute and 36 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Benjamin Bauer, of C-E-C. Ely junior Gabe Pointer finished in 21:57, just six seconds behind Bauer and nearly two minutes ahead of the fourth-place finisher. ....
