Allison Kate Photography Allison Kate Photography Allison Kate Photography Allison Kate Photography Friday, March 5, 2021 11:32 am GIANTS RIDGE – Four Ely Timberwolves skiers are headed to state competition on the heels of strong qualifying runs at the 7A sectional meet at Giants Ridge on Wednesday. “We had a great day,” Ely Head Coach Paula Anderson said. “We would have loved to have qualified a team or two, but we did qualify four individuals so that makes us very happy.”

Johnston, Devine top field

Marshall Helmberger ELY Senior Jasper Johnston and sophomore Zoe Devine each blew away their respective competition during the Ely Skiathlon, held last Thursday at Hidden Valley. Devine had strong support from teammates Phoebe Helm, Ava Skustad, and Julia Schwinghamer as the girls racked up 391 points to take first in the team competition against Carlton-Esko-Cromwell and Two Harbors. C-E-C was second with 381 points. The boys were edged by C-E-C, 386-384. Johnston, who had missed some earlier meets as he competed in Midwest regional competition, was in usual form during the combined freestyle and classic competition in Ely on Jan. 28, finishing the course in just 20:15, a full minute and 36 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Benjamin Bauer, of C-E-C. Ely junior Gabe Pointer finished in 21:57, just six seconds behind Bauer and nearly two minutes ahead of the fourth-place finisher.

Ely skiers hold their own in early season

Marshall Helmberger DULUTH Ely skiers took the top spots in a tough field here on Tuesday, but both the boys and girls finished second overall on the challenging 5K Spirit Mountain course. Ely junior Gabriel Pointer took first place in the varsity boys competition, with a time of 12:20.4. Jon Hakala finished in the fourth spot (13:07.8) and Micah Larson finished seventh (13:38.7). For the girls, sophomore Zoe Devine dominated the field, finishing first with a time of 13:59.0. Phoebe Helms finished in sixth place and was the only other Ely competitor to finish in the top ten. “Ely did well individually, but we’re definitely in a building year team-wise,” said Ely Head Coach Paula Anderson. The boys competed this week without their standout, Jasper Johnston, who was competing in the CXC Cup, a qualifying regional competition for the Junior Nationals in Cable, Wis. Johnston took first place in the classic competition during that event.
