Saturday evening in the South End By David Grima | May 20, 2021 A couple from Connecticut recently agreed to buy a house in Rockland that consists of an upstairs apartment and a downstairs apartment, and expressed their willingness to pay a half-million dollars for it. The two tenants were given notice, and immediately began looking for alternative places to live. This is not easy to do in Rockland, right now. Before the Modern Plague hit us over a year ago, it was already difficult to find homes to rent or buy in town, and now it is even more difficult as local people often have to compete with wealthier types from away. ....
Michael S. Bedell. THOMASTON Michael S. Bedell, age 53, passed away on May 4, 2021, at his home in Thomaston, Maine after a long illness. He was a kind-hearted lover of life, with an infectious smile, and a passion for pursuing happiness. Mike was born May 10, 1967, in Los Angeles, California, and moved between Venice, Northern California, and LA until age 13 when he moved in with his father and family in Tenants Harbor, Maine. His formative years were spent in Maine with his dad, stepmother, and half-siblings. He graduated from Georges Valley High School in 1986 and soon after, moved back to Los Angeles where he graduated from LA Trade Tech with a journeyman’s electrician s license. He was immediately hired by the City of Los Angeles, Bureau of Street Lighting. ....
Lars Houtsma. THOMASTON Lars Houtsma went home to the Lord on April 19, 2021. He was born April 21, 1958 in Arlington, Virginia, the son of Sara and Garry Houtsma, and moved to Thomaston, ME when he was 15 years old. He graduated from Georges Valley High School in 1977. Lars wore many different hats during his life. He enjoyed tinkering with mechanical things, and there was not an engine he couldn’t fix. He had a passion for cars, motorcycles, and driving fast. It would make him laugh to scare his sister with his driving antics. Lars helped care for his mother and father in their later years. After his parents passed, Lars took pride in presiding at the head of the table, as the family patriarch, during holiday dinners. At Christmas time his nieces would beg him to make, and look forward to, his Christmas cookies and the all-time favorite saltines, caramel and chocolate treats. ....
Mary Mills Mitchell. THOMASTON Mary Mills Mitchell, of Thomaston, died peacefully at the Knox Center on March 30, 2021, on her 94th birthday, following a period of declining health. Born in St. George in 1927, she was the daughter of George and Flora Benson Mills, the second of four children. She graduated from St. George High School with the class of 1945. In 1946, she married Robert C. Mitchell, settling in Thomaston. There they spent their entire 40 years of marriage, building a home and running a poultry farm while raising their family. Their children have many fond memories of growing up on the farm. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Mary was a homemaker while her children were young, doing much of her own gardening, canning, and sewing. She worked for many years as a lunch lady at both Georges Valley High School and Thomaston Grammar School. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters, the ladies auxiliary branch of the Knights of Pythias. An avid reade ....
Elizabeth Ann Carney Simms. THOMASTON Elizabeth Ann Carney Simms, 65, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at Penbay Medical Center in Rockport. Born May 10, 1955 in Rockland to Malcolm and Anna (Mudryk) Carney, she was raised in Thomaston, educated in local schools, and graduated from Georges Valley High School as a member of the Class of 1973. Following high school, she attended Mr. Bernard’s School of Hair Fashion in Lewiston and became a licensed cosmetologist. For more than 45 years she stood behind the chair of her salon, “Elizabeth’s Cuts & Styles,” adding to the inner beauty of her clients. She listened, learned, shared the gift of laughter, and also shared in their joys and sorrows. ....
