We are now nine hours after this accident and as you can see, the northbound lanes of highway 17 are still closed. The latest word we have from the chp is they are hoping to finish up this work and get these lanes open by 6 00 this evening. This is an accident that claimed one life and sent 7 people to the hospital. From chopper 5, the wide area of destruction is clear. The chp says a big rig hauling a double trailer fully loaded with dirt lost control coming down from the summit. In all, the Chain Reaction crash involved 10 cars in addition to the big rig. His brakes began to smoke coming down the hill. They became not working properly based upon the fact that they heated up. So he experienced brake fade coming down the 6 grade approximately.
