Oh, yes, i always did. Captioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. This is our western addition. The cross border war between israel and the palestinians in gaza escalated dramatically today prompting president obama to call israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to offer u. S. Help to arrange a ceasefire. Israels military says the palestinians fired well over 100 rockets into residential areas of israel today. The israelis say that their aerial assault on gaza hit about 500 targets. So far this week at least 80 palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed. Violence between israel and the palestinians in gaza has been going on for decades, of course. This latest battle was sparked by the kidnapping and murder of three jewish students in the west Bank Last Month and the revenge killing of a palestinian teenager. Holly williams is in gaza city. In broad daylight on a busy street in gaza today, this car was incinerated by an air strike. Islamic jihad, a Palestinian Militant Group told us two of the three men who were killed were its members. Israel also targets what it calls command centers, though in reality they are the homes of militants. To give their families a chance to evacuate the israeli army s metimes telephones in advance. Or fires a small missile without an explosive as a warning. And the strikes are pinpoint accurate. This is all that is left of a house barely ten feet wide. The rest of the street was left unscathed. The residents were warned by a telephone and all of them survived. But the system doesnt always work. And a rising civilian death toll is stoking palestinian anger. Today they buried more of their dead in gaza, some of them children. A family of eight was killed in this home on tuesday. The Israeli Military said they were given a warning and made it out in time but then returned too soon just as the strike hit. The familys neighbor reda kaware gave us a different events. The family could not leave at this moment because it not given a lot of time to leave the homes. Reporter they werent given enough time to get out . Two or three minutes. Pelley and Holly Williams is in gaza city tonight. Holly, what is israel saying about these civilian casualties . Reporter well, scott, israel claims that the militants are using civilians as human shields. For instance, by launching rockets from residential areas. The Israeli Military said today that nearly 150 missiles were fired at israel. They did some damage to buildings but so far no israelis have been killed. And that is thanks in part to israels iron dome Missile Defense system which shoots down many of those rockets. Pelley iron dome paid for mostly by the United States. Holly williams, reporting from gaza tonight, thank you, holly. Early last year we began this broadcast with very hopeful news in the battle against aids. Doctors in mississippi had said that they had rid a baby girl of hiv, the virus that cause the disease. Well, tonight dr. Jon lapook tells us theres been a Major Development in her case. Physicians at the university of Mississippi Medical Center have been monitoring the four yearold girl since her unusually aggressive treatment during infancy. There had been no trace of active virus for more than two years. But a routine checkup this month showed the virus had returned. Dr. Anthony fauferjy oversees aids research at the National Institutes of health. We were obviously very disappointed because we were hoping that this would be the first example of a real cure of a baby related to the fact that the baby was treated aggressively very, very early, essentially from the time of birth. Reporter the case was especially promising because doctors thought the early regimen might have stopped the virus from finding hiding places in the body. At birth the girl tested positive for hiv and was immediately treated with a three drug cocktail. At 29 days she was hiv negative. But after 18 months, the mother stopped treatment and disappeared for five months. When the child returned to the hospital, doctors were surprised to find no sign of the virus. Normally it must be suppressed by the indefinite use of medication. The girl is now back on anti viral treatment and is responding well. Dr. Hannah gay who has cared for the little girl since birth released a statement saying it was a punch in the gut to see these test results last week. Pelley a lot more work to be done, jon, thanks, very much. Today the Republican Leadership in washington took a very dim view of president obamas nearly 4 billion request to cope with a surge of Illegal Immigrants. Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell complained the president was asking for a blank check. Mr. Obama says he needs the money to care for more than 50,000 immigrant children who have come here since october. And to expand facilities so that Illegal Immigrants can be sent home more quickly. The governor of texas says he has a solution to this crisis. Republican rick perry shared his idea with president obama in a meeting yesterday. And he shared it with our Major Garrett today. I told the president , i said you can address this, and you can address it very quickly by picking up the phone, directing the department of defense to put 1,000 National Guard troops on that border, move them to the border, along with the texas Law Enforcement surge that we have eming on, along with the local Law Enforcement. What you are saying is Central American countries and the parents considering putting the children, need to see a militarized presence on the u. S. Mexico borders a deterrent, the mere pictures will speak louder than anything you or the president might say. I would suggest it is not just pictures. I mean its communications. Its talking back to the people back home. And theyre going to hear very quickly that this has changed, this border secure. The president opposes sending the National Guard to the Rio Grande Valley arguing the problem there is not leprehending the unaccompanied minor children but caring for them while their immigration status is reviewed. Scott, the white house says it will be difficult for the president to speed up the deportation process without the new funds and Legal Authority he has asked congress to approve. Pelley Major Garrett at the white house tonight, thank you, major. Part of this problem stems from the fact that there are tens of thousands of illegal immigrant children waiting for their day in court. Under a 2008 law most children who enter the United States illegally without their parents are automatically entitled to a hearing. In 26 courtrooms all across america, they make their case. Michelle miller met two of them in new york. 14yearold jose amaya left a new york city courtroom today with his older sister and attorney hopeful that he will soon gain legal status in the United States. The honduran native says after his father abandoned the family he fled gang violence. Its very complicated, he says, because if you dont do what they say, they can kill you. Amaya was one of 100 children telling their stories to a federal immigration judge who will eventually decide their fate. Amayas sister paid for his lawyer, raj jadeja. The gangs run honduras el salvador, i dont blame him for coming. I would do the same thing. May other children could not afford attorneys. 16yearold alissa from el salvador showed up with a family friend wishing she had a lawyer. It would help me with the process, she told us. Nationwide there are more than 40,000 other cases waiting to be heard in a backlogged system. Jadeja took on 12 other childrens cases today, two free of charge. Generally a case takes about generally a case takes about two years to complete. Or longer. We sat in on 32 hearings today. There were no rulings, and all of those cases, the children were told to come back to court in two to eight months. Pelley michelle, thanks very much. There was a terrible fire in lowell, massachusetts, today. Seven people were killed before dawn. When flames swept through an Apartment Building just 100 yards from a fire station. Jonathan elias from our cbs boston station wbz is following this. Reporter cell phone video shows the fire ripping through the upper floors of the three story Apartment Building. There are people hanging out the windows. Reporter witnesses said tenants jumped from windows, some tossing babies to rescuers below. Four adults and three children died. Five of the victims were in one family. Fire Marshal Steven cohen. Obviously a horrible day in the city of lowell. I cannot recall in recent times responding to a fire with this many fatalities. Reporter the cause of the fire is under investigation. A stash of fireworks in one of the upstairs apartments may have been a factor. The building had a fire alarm but survivors say they heard nothing. Now ten people were hurt in this fire including a fire captain. All are expected to survive. As for that building having fire sprinklers inside, it didnt. That building went up in 1890, long before state law required it. Pelley and one witness tells us that three of the children who were killed are from the same family. Jonathan elias of wbz, thank you, jonathan. Today a suspect is being held in texas on six counts of capital murder. Police say that ronald lee haskel went looking for his estranged wife at her sisters house near houston yesterday. She wasnt there. So haskel allegedly shot and killed the sister, her husband, and four of their children. A fifth child survived and warned the police that haskel was searching for other members of the family. Officers tracked him down and after a three hour standoff he gave up. Any time you have a type of drug thats being sold in widespread money becomes an issue. And people will try to sell that drug to make money. And then people will start committing robberies and doing things they otherwise wouldnt do in search for that drug and in search for money to pay for that. I dont think theres one dovestigation where we arrest traffickers that we dont recover firearms. You didnt see that five years ago. You see it now. Reporter we toured the troubled east side of indianapolis with jack riley of the Drug Enforcement administration. So youve got a ready supply of drugs and a ready supply of weapons. Sounds like very combustible combination. It really is. And to be honest with you, that is why i dont sleep at night. Reporter in indianapolis 31 Police Officers have been shot at over the past 18 months. 9 of them were hit. But resistance to tax increases makes it harder to hire more. Over the fourth of july holiday Police Officer perry renn, a 22 year veteran was killed in a gun fight with a suspect who police say fired an assault weapon at him.
