gettysburg national park. he s here to talk to us about one of the world s lesser known but vital actions of the battle on culp s hill. ladies and gentlemen, dan walsh. i want to begin by thanking all my friends and colleagues in the emerging civil war, chris monkowski, kevin pollock, chris white at the american battlefield trust for having me today to present you this often forgotten story of the battle of gettysburg. over the last 157 years, so many of us are familiar with the stories of joshua chamberlain and little round top, pickets charge, cemetary ridge, seminary ridge, but often what gets lost is some of the stories that would occur on the union army s right flank on july 2nd and july 3rd known as culp s hill. at the dedication for the monument to honor george greene after the battle of gettysburg, illuminary dan sickles would give a dedication speech to this monument that had been dedicated in honor of greene and his performance at gettysburg on july 2, 1863. sickl

[applause] good morning, all. thank you for having me. you have heard about the big guns from wayne and jim. when i would like to speak about s first plan for victory at gettysburg, at least one part of it. and the fighting on july 3 in the morning there went on for seven straight hours, some of the longest sustained fighting at gettysburg and amost in the whole war, but relatively unvisited area of the field. focus was largely on july 2, decisive leadership on the union right, small unit , namely george s. greene and how that leadership made a dramatic difference in the outcome there. works, ilove when it would like to speak about july 3 dawn on, how leadership in the struggle played out for culp s hill. derailedof the potomac lee was not served by subordinates. , judgment made by both sides, some fog of war and man lead to costly maneuvers, yet the courage and determination when you look at these fellows speaks maryam s volumes of the type of men who fought at gettysburg.

a family of a family of seven is homeless tonight, after an early morning fire in cedar rapids. it happened around 3 a-m on the 33 hundred block of stwood drive northwest.fire crews found the fire in a bedroom upstairs and were able to knock it out quickly.the home is unlivable right now because of water damage - and a lack o oheat. no word yet on what caused the fire. the good news is nobody was hurt because working smoke alarms alerted the family - and they got out safely. the american red cross is helping them, but volunteers also hit the streets today to make sure other lives will be spared. spared.cbs news reporter marissa scott shares why it s you only have two minutes to escape when a home is on fire so it s very important to check and install smoke alarms every year. year. more than a dozen volunteers walked in the cold saturday afternoon to make sure residents like marilyn belcher had working smoke detectors. detectors. i m glad they could come and do it. belcher is
