Jan. 25 A former Kansas City Fire Department captain was sentenced Monday to six years in federal prison for illegally selling dozens of guns.
James Samuels sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release. The 55-year-old man, detained at the Leavenworth Detention Center, appeared in an orange jumpsuit during the hearing conducted by video conference.
Last year, Samuels admitted he purchased 77 firearms from November 2013 to August 2018. He was not a licensed dealer, yet he transferred 47 of the guns to third parties. He made a $40 to $50 profit per firearm, according to prosecutors. ....

Skidmore is a small town in Nodaway County, Missouri, United States. The population was 284 at the 2010 Census (estimated 269 as of 2016). Despite its small population, the town has a long history of violence, and an unusually high crime rate per capita (murder rate included).
Let s go through some of the more notorious cases. The first major murder case from Skidmore, Missouri, took place in 1981. It is arguably one of the most infamous modern cases of vigilante justice.
Ken Rex McElroy, a local resident, reportedly terrorized the town of Skidmore for years. Over the course of his life, McElroy was accused of dozens of felonies, including assault, child molestation, statutory rape, arson, hog and cattle rustling, and burglary. Lisa Montgomery's federal execution nears, killed woman, cut out baby

Lisa Montgomery, a longtime Kansan, became the first woman to be executed by the federal government in 67 years early Wednesday. She lived a childhood so abusive her attorneys call it akin to torture.
She was beaten, repeatedly raped by her stepfather and his friends and sexually trafficked by her mother.
At 18, she married her stepbrother, who also beat and raped her. She had four children in less than four years before being sterilized. She lapsed increasingly into mental illness and repeatedly faked pregnancy.
But those who believe she should be put to death say her lifetime of horrors can t excuse what came next: On Dec. 16, 2004, she loaded a steak knife, umbilical cord clamps and part of a clothesline into her car and drove 175 miles from her home in east-central Kansas to the northwest Missouri home of Bobbie Jo Stinnett, an expectant mother she had met at a dog show. ....
