April 30 marked Colour Night this year a celebration to welcome in the newly election Students’ Union (SU) representatives for the upcoming school year. This years’ festivities took place over Zoom, as the members of the 79th Students’ Legislative Council (SLC) took their oaths and began the transition process. After the last roll call of the 78th SLC, Semhar Abraha, outgoing vice-president academic, announced the recipient of the Exceptional Student SLC Award, returning Faculty of Arts representative Fayo Abdi. “This year has been extremely challenging for all of us as student leaders, but our SLC obviously excelled at advocating for students and shedding light on the ongoing disparities and challenges faced by all students this year,” Abraha said. “Honouring one person tonight doesn’t mean in any way that each and every one of you did any less in advocacy.” ....
2021 SU election results held online On March 4, the winners of the 2021 Students’ Union general election were announced online over Zoom. Although held in a digital space, 103 participants were logged into the Zoom call, and 3,055 student votes were cast. The results were announced by Chief Returning Officers Feyre Gezahegn and Amanda Cha. With 16 acclamations in this years’ election, only four races were ultimately contested Faculty of Nursing representative, Faculty of Kinesiology representative, Faculty of Arts representative and president. Successful candidates responded to the Gauntlet on their wins over social media. Nicole Schmidt will be the next SU president with 76 per cent of the vote. ....
On Feb. 26, a combined forum for candidates running in this up-coming Students’ Union election took place online via Zoom. This event was organized by the Students in Communications (SIC) club and was moderated by Shaziah Jinnah, who is the vice-president student affairs with SIC. The two candidates for president, Rayane Issa and Nicole Schmidt, took part in the forum, each advocating for the return of in-person attendance of classes. They both agreed that student consultation will be necessary in order to ensure the process is student-centered but noted that it would depend on the timing and safety that was best for students returning. Talks of tuition increases in response to the Alberta Provincial Budget had Schmidt and Issa present two different approaches about how they would tackle fighting tuition increases. ....
SU election supplement 2021: Endorsements Kristy Koehler, Outgoing Editor-in-Chief President: I’ll be moderating the presidential debate so will be abstaining from endorsement to preserve the integrity of the debate. Faculty of Arts representative: Rody Visotski ran last year and, to what I believe is the detriment of the student body, did not get elected. He’s come back this year for another go and I hope this time, voters choose him. Not only because he says he’ll keep coming back until he gets elected, but because he’s fantastic. He’s passionate, energetic and has a large but well-thought through platform. He’s not in any state of starry eyed naivety about how the SU operates and knows what’s doable and what isn’t. Visotski is someone you can listen to for hours and not get bored. He has an upbeat and very friendly personality but behind it is plenty of fight for students. His engaging nature will serve the students in the Faculty of Arts ....
