This year, the Student’s Union (SU) announced 40 recipients of the annual Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA). These recipients honoured faculty members, instructors and teaching assistants, who were able to deliver exceptional instruction in a more than difficult academic year. The shift to online learning certainly wasn’t easy, and in a statement, Semhar Abraha, former vice-president academic, also recognized this.
“This year has been extremely challenging for teaching and learning at all levels,” Abraha said. “Everyone has had to adapt and sacrifice in different ways. We are proud to abe able to highlight teachers who went above and beyond to support their students, especially during this difficult year. We hope these teachers know how much they are appreciated.”
April 30 marked Colour Night this year a celebration to welcome in the newly election Students’ Union (SU) representatives for the upcoming school year.
This years’ festivities took place over Zoom, as the members of the 79th Students’ Legislative Council (SLC) took their oaths and began the transition process.
After the last roll call of the 78th SLC, Semhar Abraha, outgoing vice-president academic, announced the recipient of the Exceptional Student SLC Award, returning Faculty of Arts representative Fayo Abdi.
“This year has been extremely challenging for all of us as student leaders, but our SLC obviously excelled at advocating for students and shedding light on the ongoing disparities and challenges faced by all students this year,” Abraha said. “Honouring one person tonight doesn’t mean in any way that each and every one of you did any less in advocacy.”
Returning Students’ Union (SU) Faculty of Science representative Chaten Jessel has been working hard this past year, creating community initiatives in support of undergraduate students at the University of Calgary.
Three of these projects were in collaboration with other SU representatives from the 2019–20 school year Manpreet Sahota and Pragya Chopra and will carry on into Jessel’s second term as faculty rep. These projects include the Earth Science (ES) 160 study space renovation, the Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (IDEA) Awards and the Open Education Resource Fund (OERF).
The $35,460.22 ES160 renovation will provide students with 25 new study carrels with access to outlets and a study lamp. Along with other space improvements like white boards and new paint, this initiative hopes to reduce the severe lack of study spaces on campus and will allow all students to effectively complete their academic work when it is deemed safe to return to campus.
