February 5, 2021 6:46 am BELLINGHAM, Wash. Demand is high but supply is low for COVID-19 vaccines in Whatcom County. County Health Department Director Erika Lautenbach presided over an on-line town hall Thursday evening that exposed just how tight vaccine supplies are. Lautenbach said the Health Department estimates 60,000 people in the county meet eligibility criteria. Dr. Rodney Anderson with Family Care Network is among health care providers who took part and expressed frustration with the slow roll-out. But answers about what local providers can expect were just as scarce as vaccine in Whatcom County. Lautenbach restated that she’s penned a letter to the state secretary of health asking for more transparency in vaccine allocation. ....
January 22, 2021 8:44 am BELLINGHAM, Wash. Local health providers are beginning to expand vaccine distribution beyond health workers, first responders and the most vulnerable. Dr. James Bochsler with PeaceHealth says they’ve begun contacting their patients who fit in the 1-B-1 category. Bochsler said they are going to send out email communications to all primary care patients who meet the criteria. They’re also contacting their patients who aren’t primary care but are seeing a PeaceHealth specialist. Sea-Mar Community Heath Centers and the Family Care Network are also contacting their patients. But they all caution that people need to be patient. ....

Jan. 21 Anxious to know when they can be vaccinated against COVID-19, droves of Whatcom County residents are calling health care providers jamming their phone lines for hours, even crashing them. Family Care Network has reported fielding thousands of inquiries. PeaceHealth said it is experiencing a 4,000% increase in daily queries from the community. The Whatcom County Health Department has reported getting an ever increasing number of calls, as has Unity Care NW.
