AFSCME 3299 condemns alleged use of police during UC labor dispute


The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, or AFSCME Local 3299, launched a campaign condemning UC administration for alleged use of police force on a UC worker due to a language barrier.
The worker one out of more than 27,000 people represented by the union allegedly lived with roommates who had tested positive for COVID-19, according to UCPD Lieutenant Sabrina Reich. An AFSCME Local 3299 campaign letter alleges that UC management gave the worker instructions to leave and quarantine, but put “minimal effort” into communicating the message.
As a result, the campaign letter added that the worker did not understand the COVID-19 protocol and arrived to work during his next scheduled shift at Dwinelle Hall on Jan. 18. ....

ASUC discusses faculty concerns on fall 2021, mental health survey

The ASUC general meeting consisted of conversation surrounding what instruction will look like when returning to an in-person setting come fall 2021.
Amid the return to mostly in-person instruction in the fall, the ASUC’s general meeting Wednesday featured presentations on faculty concerns regarding instruction, student mental health and updates to the DeCal program.
Eugene Whitlock, UC Berkeley assistant vice chancellor of human resources, presented on the concerns faculty have around returning to campus. Whitlock said many instructors want to adopt a hybrid structure where they are able to still work remotely some days of the week. ....

'A silver lining out of the pandemic': Berkeley learns from remote work


Before the start of the pandemic, the city of Berkeley and UC Berkeley operated with more than 40 commissions and about 15,000 employees, respectively. Employees were spread across the city and campus, filling the pre-pandemic Berkeley landscape.
With the coronavirus shifting the traditional workplace to remote work and posing a variety of challenges, both the city and campus have developed virtual work strategies that may carry on into the future.
Although campus already had systems in place to manage remote work prior to the pandemic, according to campus Chief People and Culture Officer Eugene Whitlock, expanding those systems to manage the entire campus workforce was a major challenge. ....
