Berkeley mayor presents recommendations to city budget committee

Berkeley City Council’s Budget and Finance Committee met Monday to discuss Mayor Jesse Arreguín’s supplemental recommendations to the proposed budget for the 2022 fiscal year.
According to City Manager Dee Williams-Ridley, the committee has made many changes to different versions of the budget.
“We try to take into account all the community’s concerns, all of the community needs as much as possible,” Williams-Ridley said in the meeting. “Really pushing our economic platform to rejuvenate our economy here in the city and carving out space to address many of the labor issues that we have on our table here in the city of Berkeley.” ....

Where I grew up, May 1 was a celebration of spring with leaving surprise baskets of candy on doorsteps and then running away. I didn’t learn about May 1 as International Worker’s Day until years later after I left that little town in Minnesota. May 1 is also the birthday of a friend who caught COVID-19 in January 2021 and is still struggling with what we call “long haulers syndrome.” An attendant for her daughter went partying over New Years and brought it in.
I am sharing the story of my friend as the COVID-19 pandemic is not over even as the incidence of new cases in the US is dropping and California is looking good. For some like my friend COVID may never be over. Please do all you can to persuade unvaccinated 16 year olds and older in your circle of friends to get their COVID-19 vaccines and complete the two shot regi ....

The Berkeley Neighborhoods Council (BNC) is writing this letter because of deep concerns expressed by many Berkeley neighborhoods over the increasing threat to the well-being of residents and the unshakable hope that the year 2021 will provide the opportunity for a fresh start for cities everywhere. While these concerns include the broad spectrum of urban life issues, this letter focuses on existing land use policies, procedures and practices that affect the daily lives of residents in every part of our City. The Berkeley Neighborhoods Council is not anti-development, anti-housing or anti-business, we are pro-people.
These concerns have been expressed over a long period of time, mostly at meetings of the Zoning Adjustments Board (ZAB) and on appeals to the City Council. Today, they have grown to the extent that there are increasing calls for a holistic ....

'A silver lining out of the pandemic': Berkeley learns from remote work

Before the start of the pandemic, the city of Berkeley and UC Berkeley operated with more than 40 commissions and about 15,000 employees, respectively. Employees were spread across the city and campus, filling the pre-pandemic Berkeley landscape.
With the coronavirus shifting the traditional workplace to remote work and posing a variety of challenges, both the city and campus have developed virtual work strategies that may carry on into the future.
Although campus already had systems in place to manage remote work prior to the pandemic, according to campus Chief People and Culture Officer Eugene Whitlock, expanding those systems to manage the entire campus workforce was a major challenge. ....
