Theres the faithbased initiative. There are other synagogues, churches and faithbased groups that deal with this issue in their own particular way. This morning we would like to invite you into a serious and important conversation. We have rabbi Stacy Friedman and joann foreman who is a member of the Mental Health initiative coordinator. Thank you so much for being here. Rabbi friedman, why do we jump in and ask why you consider this particular issue so important for your synagogue into the Jewish Community at large. When we decided this was a real need, i had been at the congregation for 25 years. More and more people had come to me to talk to me about their Mental Health crises. It could be them personally or Family Members and happen more and more. That was in the spring. That summer was the summer that Robin Williams took his life. Suddenly, and really for the first time that i had seen or our country has seen the issue of suicide and Mental Illness being the top issue that it is.

You may remember those moments in middle school where they felt left out, or that one child sitting by themselves every day. Its a culture to have them feel accepted and included when they show up each day. Host michael, how do you see how beyond differences punctures in the functions in the classroom . By bringing an awareness of social isolation, there is medical information that shows that it will impact students later in life. What we have been able to do with the organization is educate young people. Jumping into this conversation, its a little bit of a different kind of conversation that we usually have, but lgbtq life in the Faith Community and Jewish Community, lets just say to start out by talking about what your experience has been in the Jewish Community yourself. Maxine . Well i am going to date myself but i am twice blessed, being a lesbian and being jewish, it was very difficult because i didnt come out until graduate school. Because i didnt think being [null] had anything to being jewish. So i had no role models. I had no one to model myself after, and i didnt think i could be jewish and be [null] , until i met somebody in graduate school at the same seminary that i attended as a communal professional spending nonprofit studying nonprofit management and my first woman lover was there at Hebrew Union College and i thought oh my god, the heavens opened. You mean talk about intersectionality, here were two permanent parts of myself that became integrated. And rabbi zalman .

Of your organization. Yes, were hoping to remind people were still on earth when were in the city. Lets ask the basic question of what is jewish camping . . Well it secures the jewish future. When children go to jewish summer camp and get grounded in a Jewish Community in that part of their identity, theyre more likely to want to grow up and participate in jewish life as an adult. For me growing up i did not live in a big Jewish Community and summer camp was the first place i felt surrounded by other jews and where its normal to be jewish and cool and fun. So summer camp gave that toe me and i see it given to so many children today where they feel comfortable and positive about their identity. So its a residential summer camp experience. Yes, its a sleep away camp residential experience outside of yosemite in the Sierra Nevada mountains. So between the two of you, the ways in which you go about your programming, how is it you understand the way somebody might belong to a synagogue and
