karen: welcome. thank you all for being here. before we get started, i just want to tell you that i am so happy to be having this event because we never get to talk about history and historians. we always talk about politics and the law and foreign policy. and it is all very interesting. but those of you who know me know that i like the history. and i think it would ve been a very good thing if more historians were weighing in more frequently and people who write about politics in a historical vein and people who think about what s come before. we don t have enough of it and this is our meager attempt to try to do that. before we get started, let me just say that this is being recorded by c-span. you know the routine, which means that when you get the mic, speak into the mic, wait for the mic before you speak. and be aware of the fact that it s being recorded. so before we get started with our discussion, let me introduce the men to my left. jim banner who edited the bo ....
