and i am trying to be brave and know that my family and i are safe and i will worry about all of that other stuff later. i am 67, lived here for five years. and now it is gone. it is underwater. underwater. so much of that area still underwater there, want to go to matlacha in florida. where liz mclaughlin standing by for us. let s take us there if you will once again. joining at the top of the last hour, as you are still in that area that is just completely devastating to see a road completely broken up really. crumbled upon itself. water still surrounding the area. what more are you seeing? absolutely yasmin this does not look like the result of a hurricane. this looks like an earthquake or something. it is just crumpled concrete, the only artery to the height of pine island behind me. matlacha, this idea like kind of fishing village now just completely crumbled. and in fact there are some remains of homes here. one zahra behind it are completely gone. just washed out
off of the gulf coast there. we re not going to get a sense of it until tomorrow. but yes, it looks pretty path down in. and we ll be talking about this later in the hour. thanks, chris. and thank you for joining us. hurricane ian continues to create a swath of in made landfall just after 3:00 this afternoon in southwestern florida, near k o connor, a island off of the coast of fort myers. ian came ashore as a category four hurricane with 150 mile per hour winds. just a few miles per hour shy of a category five. only for hurricane stronger than that have made landfall in the united states ever. but it is not just the strength of the storm, it is the size. this is the view of hurricane in from the international space station this afternoon. just showing how massive the storm is. the national river describes in as battering the florida peninsula with tied and winds, and flooding. ian has just now weakened to a category two storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles
down, you have trees that are down, you have a lot of hazards right now. we do anticipate a lot of the water will subside in some of the barrier islands, in some of the coasts, but some of those inland places off rivers and off these inlets, you know, you re likely to have standing water there throughout all of today and even in the days ahead. so that is a hazard and just please be aware that that is something that you if you weathered the storm to this point, going and doing and getting involved in that is just totally not worth it, and we want to minimize any harm to anybody as a result of what we re seeing right now in the streets. we have had 26 states provide support. we really appreciate that. it s going to be put to use. this is i don t think we ve ever seen an effort mobilized for this many rescues this quickly. but we appreciate it and we will make good use of it. we want people to be safe. those who have who are in need of life support right now, help is on t
and running but we also understand the severity of the storm and the really, really catastrophic damage that it can inflict on thes southwest coast of florida. you re starting to see power outages, but you ll see way more over the next 48 hours. you ll have millions of people without power in the state within the next 48 hours. no question. this morning kevin guthrie, our team management has asked for additional high water vehicles from the department of defense and coordination of fema. they have approved the request for dual status of the national guard forces under title 10 to provide additional resources and additional forces and we re really thankful for the fulfillment of that request. we have about 1,200 personnel for the department of transportation that are on standby to perform operations. these guys can t work if they can t get to where they are going. so that s the top priority for the department of transportation and highway patrol. to clear these roads torks mak
